❤️Let’s heal from COVID trauma together!

On 10/20/21 my colleague, Dr. Scott Harris and I are going to be discussing the traumatic impact of Covid 19 on teens.

If you have a teen at home you are invited to join us online as we discuss what to look for, what we are seeing in our work with teens and families, and our prospective on what is ahead.

There will be a Q&A at the end for questions emailed to us prior to the event.

If interested you can register for free via the link in my bio, and if you have any questions don’t be afraid to shoot me a DM!

"They tried to bury us, they didn't know we were seeds" was part of a poem by Greek poet, Dinos Christianopoulos in 1978.

📜The original translation was "What didn't you do to bury me, but you forgot I was a seed."

⚔️It has become a battle cry for oppressed people who will not give it.

To me it is a reminder of the strength that can rise in the face of adversity.

“I said: what about my eyes?
He said: Keep them on the road.

I said: What about my passion?
He said: Keep it burning.

I said: What about my heart?
He said: Tell me what you hold inside it?

I said: Pain and sorrow.
He said: Stay with it. The wound is the place where the Light enters you.”

Recoiling from pain is natural but if we recoil too far we miss the information, learning or growth the pain contains.

Doctors listen to pain to diagnose, and emotional pain will allow us to understand ourselves and others, to learn and grow.

My goal in my therapy practice and my personal life is similar, to approach pain with curiosity, to hold with kindness and understand, and become accustomed to being with instead of recoiling from pain.

😌What I love most about this quote and is the unapologetic way she embraces who she is.

She does not shrink for the comfort of others. She embraces all. She is and isn't afraid to take up space.

One of my favorite quotes from

Saying yes when you want to say no is a breeding ground for resentments and is destructive to relationships.

Learning to say yes when you want to say yes and no when you want to say no is freedom.

🚨And remember, no is a complete sentence. No need for lengthy explanations.

Bring your body, no matter the season and come as you are.

Every winter the media tells us to undo the holidays, every spring they scare us about bathing suits.

It is a SALES PITCH.

Don't be sold and come as you are.

👏If diets succeeded you would never have had to diet twice. Think about it.

I went on my first diet in the 🤯 7th grade, my second in the 8th, and continued the trend for a few decades. Diets always worked temporarily but the weight always came back with interest.

That is true for most people who diet.

There are no longterm studies showing long term intentional weightloss as successful.

What diets succeed at is a business model that creates repeat customers who blame themselves and not the product for failure.

What does work? Self-acceptance, self-compassion, intuitive eating and joyful movement.

💌Anyone I talk to about body image will be able to tell me what they don't like about their body.

We live in a world that is constantly selling the message that we are never good enough.

Thin privilege does not mean you are free from body insecurities brought on by diet culture.

Thin privilege is about what you do not have to consider or worry about.

If you wear a size 12 or smaller you can shop anywhere. Ground stores cater to you.

For larger sizes, finding fashionable clothing is considerably more difficult.

Even when ground stores carry plus sizes, they often don't carry a large selection.

Restaurants, theaters, concerts, doctors' offices, and airplane seats don't consider how the seating they choose will feel for a larger person.

And if you go to the doctor because your knee hurts they are likely to investigate why.

If you are in a larger body they are more likely to recommend weight loss without looking much further.

People don't automatically assume you are unhealthy because of your size and your body shape/size is not considered an epidemic or a disease.

Thin privilege means you are not experiencing weight stigma which detrimentally impacts physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.

TAKE UP SPACE with your body, your voice, your passion, your emotions, your thoughts.

Don't let anyone shush you, shrink you, invalidate you.

Comedian and fat activist, says, "“We constantly have to reach an impossible standard in order to just be taken a little bit seriously, and you can't help but wonder if it's all a trick.

If we are meant to be too busy applying lipstick to get involved with politics, business decisions and activism.”

So don't reach for the impossible standard, don't shrink to be acceptable. Instead stretch, reach and expand.

Make noise and take up space.

😌I like to think of meditation as a workout for your brain.

As you sink into some aspect of the present moment, your 🧠brain naturally attempts to hijack your attention.

🤯Those thoughts that pop in are normal.

The "workout" involves becoming aware when the hijack has taken place, noting it and without judgement bringing your attention back to your chosen focus.

🤔How I wish I learned this skill when I was a kid.

💌What if rejection is just a redirection toward something better?

A better relationship, friendship, job?

Or perhaps rejection is protecting us from a worse circumstance?

Or providing an opportunity to practice acceptance and letting go.

Usually when I experienced rejection by a person we weren't a good fit, didn't bring out the best in each other or didn't want the same things.

And I remember the first job I didn't get and was very grateful I didn't start down a career path I didn't really want.

Even if I can't see the silver lining in the rejection in the moment, the phrase really grounds me and helps me to let go.

"I've been through my highs, I've been through my lows; I've been through the gamut of all things in this business.

Being too thin.

Being bigger.

I've been criticized for being on both sides of the scale. It's noise I block out automatically.

I love my body. My boyfriend loooves my body. My son is healthy and happy, so that's all that matters to me."

"If your compassion does not include yourself, it is incomplete."
-Jack Kornfield.

❤️Most of us find it easier to show compassion for others than ourselves.

😣We might even worry that self-compassion would make us complacent or selfish.

🔎Research shows the opposite is true. Self-compassionate people are more compassionate overall and tend to be less afraid of making mistakes and more able to learn from them.

😌When we are hard on ourselves, mistakes can lead to a shame spiral or the inability to move forward due to a fear of failure.

09/01/2021

is such an inspiration. Self-confidence is not a to-do item you can ✔️check off a list.

It is something we cultivate and nurture like a garden.🪴

It is something we earn by taking risks and stretching outside the comfort zone.

All the time I hear people say they want to change their bodies to be more confident.

And it’s true that fitting into the thin ideal does give you a type of confidence, but that confidence can be lost when the body fluctuates.

Earning confidence based on who you are, as opposed to how you look can move mountains.🏔
