The California Coalition for Reproductive Freedom is a statewide alliance of organizations working to promote reproductive health, rights and justice.
The California Coalition for Reproductive Freedom (CCRF) is a statewide alliance of nearly 50 organizations working to promote sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice. CCRF supports and facilitates member-driven initiatives including strategic communication, collaboration and collective policy advocacy to benefit California’s diverse women, youth and communities.
Last month, the CA Coalition for Reproductive Freedom gathered in person for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a powerful convening of more than 30 reproductive health, rights and justice warriors with one unifying goal in mind: ensuring California lives up to its promise of being a reproductive freedom state!
CCRF is thrilled to welcome Sylvia Castillo as our new Executive Director. Sylvia is a seasoned leader with more than a decade of experience in coalition building and championing reproductive health, rights, and justice. CCRF also onboarded new leadership to its Executive Advisory Committee. Check out the full announcement here: https://bit.ly/ccrfleadership2024

“More than 30 years ago, a handful of CCRF member organizations joined together in order to maximize the effectiveness of policy advocacy in women’s health and reproductive rights by sharing information and coordinating advocacy efforts. From the beginning, CCRF member organizations have represented diverse constituencies, strategies, and approaches, and have worked in all arenas in which California public policy is made: Legislative, Budgetary, Regulatory, Administrative, Judicial, and Ballot Initiatives.
CCRF itself does not take policy positions or lobby specific bills, budget items or administrative procedures. Rather, we provide space, support and facilitation to our member organizations so that they can share ideas and information, build relationships and mutual understanding, and develop coordinated advocacy strategy on shared priority issues. CCRF members meet face-to-face several times a year, hold conference calls on specific issues, and maintain an email list for members to share information and alerts.
CCRF is membership-based and members must be organizations or groups that:
Have s*xual and reproductive health, rights, and/or justice as a core part of their mission or programs
Desire to influence public policy that impacts California on these issues
Are statewide or local entities in California or are national with a strong California presence and constituencies who will participate in and support CCRF activities.
Fully share and support CCRF’s vision and values.
The Coalition is guided by our Values, Best Practices and Rules, a document created by CCRF leadership in collaboration with consultant Eyal Rabinovitch and our member organizations.
CCRF is a fiscally sponsored project of Tides Center, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and the nation’s largest fiscal sponsor.”

Lastly, happy Friday to our amazing intern, Sophie Shean! She's taking huge strides in CCRF's legislative & policy programming and we're so thankful for her. Sending love to Sophie 💛
Sophie Shean (she/her/hers) is a CCRF Summer 2022 Intern and an incoming third year student at Tulane University. She is double majoring in both Public Health and Gender and Sexuality Studies. These two areas of study have led her to be a strong advocate of reproductive freedom both in Louisiana and in her home state of California. Outside of work, Sophie enjoys drawing, hiking, and spending time with her family and friends.
Next up, happy Friday to our lovely intern, Indira D'Souza! In the midst of dismantling systemic and structural oppression, you remind us to be a little more human. Thank you for being you, Indira!
Indira D’Souza (she/her/hers) is a CCRF Summer 2022 Intern and an incoming fourth year student at UC Davis studying Global Disease Biology, Human Rights, and Political Science. She engages in reproductive health advocacy work through involvement in campus organizations (), a student-run clinic (), and perinatal health research. Outside of working, Indira enjoys cooking new foods with her partner (and his dog), and spending time outside.
Did you know, CCRF had its first round of interns this summer? A very special happy Friday to our bold leaders who go above and beyond for equity and reproductive freedom. First up, we're uplifting the beautiful Eghosa Ogbeide stepping into her power:
Eghosa Ogbeide (she/her/hers) is a CCRF Summer 2022 Intern and an incoming fourth year student at UCLA studying Human Biology & Society. She is a UCLA Public Health Scholar and currently works with the UCLA Bixby Center. She also works in student affairs with the UCLA Residential Life as an RA and is currently conducting research in ovulation cycles and physical activity. Outside of work, Eghosa enjoys cooking, traveling, and watching guilty pleasure reality shows.
Last, but definitely not least: our wonderful Executive Committee Secretary, Sylvia Castillo! Send some love her way ❤️
Sylvia Castillo joined Essential Access Health in 2014. As Director of Government + Community Affairs she shapes and advances the organization’s public policy platform, and develops advocacy strategies to promote health equity and protect and expand access to quality s*xual and reproductive health care for all. Sylvia designs community outreach and advocacy campaigns impacting women’s access to health care services and previously oversaw the Women + Health Care Reform Coalitions in northern California. Prior to joining Essential Access Health, Sylvia was a Policy Analyst at AltaMed Health Services in Los Angeles, where she advocated for the health and wellness of patients and their families and communities. A native of Los Angeles, she received her Bachelor of Arts in History and Latin American Studies from UCLA and attended the University of San Francisco’s Masters of Public Affairs program.
Rounding off our week by finishing our Executive Committee series 🔥 Like many other RJ organizations, we're catching our breath here at CCRF. With that, introducing our fabulous Executive Committee Member Onyenma Obiekea:
Onyenma Obiekea is the Policy Analyst for Black Women for Wellness (BWW) and its sister organization, Black Women for Wellness Action Project (BWWAP). She began her work in Reproductive Justice (RJ) as Program Coordinator for BWW’s Get Smart B4U Get Sexy Program - the comprehensive s*x and s*xuality education program of the Organization’s RJ focused Project, Sisters in Control. Since then, she has continued her work in RJ in varying capacities and currently works on behalf of BWW/AP, to advance intersectional, transformative legislation that seeks to secure the health and wellbeing of Black women and Girls throughout California.
