Mobile Clinic Project at UCLA

We aim to improve the health outcomes and quality of life of the homeless and other vulnerable communities within Los Angeles.

The Mobile Clinic Project at UCLA was born in response to the West Hollywood homeless population’s need for healthcare. The Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition (GWHFC) is a volunteer organization that serves food to the homeless and transient population in West Hollywood each week. Directors of GWHFC contacted advisors from the UCLA School of Public Health in 1999 as they noticed their clients w

With all client interactions comes client information, for this week’s committee highlights meet our devoted 📊 Database Committee 📊

The Database Committee proves integral to productive caseworker-client dialogue by accurately inputting the social history records of clients. Database committee members have the privilege of reading client stories and assessing triggers and risk factors, ensuring that caseworkers provide well-informed and compassionate care. They collect, input, and analyze client data to produce reports that supplement grant applications and improve clinic operations. Members develop a comprehensive understanding of how to properly handle sensitive data and in turn, a deep respect for client experiences and confidentiality. This vital committee attracts detail oriented, organized, and conscientious individuals who are eager to learn about how social determinants can dramatically impact health outcomes.

Next up on our committee spotlights we have the one and only 📝 Grant Writing 📝 Committee!

The Grant Writing Committee makes our clinic operations possible by securing major funding. Members apply for intramural grants that fund MCP truck upkeep, medications, medical supplies, and basic needs resources. As they detail all aspects of MCP in grants, committee members develop extensive knowledge on the overall operations of the organization as well as on how to fund a nonprofit organization through grant writing. On site, committee members work at the triage table, and are able to pass out the very items they secured funding for. While acquiring funds through written grants and grant hearings, the passionate and intelligent Grant Writing Committee members develop skills as eloquent writers, articulate public speakers, and advocates for our clients.

New week, new committee spotlight with our dedicated 📖 Referrals📖 Committee!

The Referrals Committee connects clients to essential health and social services that are unavailable at our street clinics. Referrals members consult clients directly to understand their needs and struggles, to then provide the best possible options to each individual client. This committee constantly updates their database by maintaining communication with external community organizations through interacting directly with sites, and consistently exploring new services. Referrals Committee members gain an incredibly holistic understanding of the resources available to those experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles. In turn, they are creative problem solvers, work effectively under pressure, and think outside of the box.

SPARK UPDATE: Our campaign officially ended this past week and we have officially REACHED OUR GOAL! Thank you all so much for donating, helping us spread the word, and above all, supporting our clients and our mission. These funds will go a long way towards ensuring our clients are able to access essential resources and medical care. Swipe to see a couple of our major supporters to the campaign!

We stand in solidarity with the University of California Teaching Assistants, Graduate researchers, student and academic workers, post docs and graders who are currently on strike.

Our university and other respective UC institutions would not be the pioneers of innovation and leaders of higher education without them.

We at UCLA’s Mobile Clinic Project believe all humans should have access to 1) a living wage, 2) healthcare, and 3) workers rights.

Please join us in solidarity with the UAW fight and look at the resources we provide to get more involved.

Also at Bruin Plaza, we invite you to directly connect with the rich stories, strong voices, and vibrant artwork of our unhoused neighbors in Los Angeles. Through this exhibit, we hope to clarify the misconceptions concerning homelessness and put a face on the issue to foster awareness, destigmatize, and humanize individuals experiencing houselessness in Los Angeles.

Listen to their experiences, wisdom, and incredible resilience. Immerse yourself in their creativity and passion through the artwork they have created. Learn about different forms of advocacy that you can partake in to help support the unhoused community. Contribute to our interactive display by answering, “What is a home to you?” to help us highlight that a home is not necessarily a house or permanent physical space, but rather a place of warmth and comfort. See you there!

11/10/2022

Come check out our selection at Bruinwalk! All proceeds and donations will be used to support our houseless neighbors in the Los Angeles community.

What is a home? 🏠

For many of us, home can be described as the warmth of our rooms, our family's houses, or the comfort of knowing you may always have access to a place that is secure and safe. Over 60,000 people in LA are currently unhoused, making up the second largest population in the United States. For them, home may be what is carried with them: the bare necessities, and most importantly, items that provide warmth. The Mobile Clinic Project at UCLA hopes to alleviate some of the challenges that housing insecure communities face by providing and distributing clothing, sleeping bags, and blankets this holiday season.

MCP's annual Sponsor a Home event seeks to introduce the UCLA campus to the issues of homelessness and housing insecurity. For many individuals, home is not a single, stationary dwelling, but an idea and a feeling that takes on many meanings. Sponsor a Home aims to bring awareness to the fluidity of what we call home as the collection of items that we carry with us, the memories that we share with others, and the people that surround us.

As the winter months approach us, let’s come together to make this season a little warmer! We will be accepting donations to our Venmo: -MCP in addition to hosting in-person events throughout the week! These donations will fund us to be able to continue to provide hygiene kits, shoes, blankets, hoodies, pants, scarves, beanies, sleeping bags, medication, tents, and tracphones for our clients. For this year's Sponsor a Home, we will be hosting a Pop-up Thrift Shop and Art Exhibit in Bruin Plaza on November 14-15 from 10AM - 4PM. Come out and be part of our mission to provide the gift of warmth this winter!

What’s up y’all! We are Health Education committee 🥳 The Health Education Committee upholds that knowledge is power. Working with a vulnerable population, there are some health experiences our clients face that are preventable, and as a committee we are committed to equipping them with knowledge they can use to make autonomous choices for themselves and their health. Thus, this committee fosters open dialogue with clients about health and how it relates to one’s physical, mental, and social well-being. Through these topics, we discuss affordable action plans for disease prevention and mitigating the risks posed to one’s health. At clinic we are the first line of contact for clients as, members disburse health products such as multivitamins and hygiene kits, while assisting at the triage table. Our committee has expanded to filling medication on site and leading discussion style seminars with interim housing clients. Off-site, we lead discussion-style seminars with interim housing clients. The Health Education Committee cultivates strong public speaking skills, a collaborative nature, holistic thinking and a passion for teaching the underserved.
A few of the key goals HE hopes to constantly encompass are bidirectional learning and empowerment! Aiming to learn about and understand the intersections of health and identity! Equipping clients with the tools and information to care for their own health and be aware of greater systems of care!

Come join the coolest committee around 🤘🏽

What’s up everyone! We are Luke and Ananya, and we are so happy to be the incoming Referrals Directors for this year!

Because MCP operates through an acute care model, Referrals’ responsibility is to connect clients to medical, dental, legal, social, housing and other community sites of service outside of our clinic space. To do this, Referrals members must interact and form a deeper connection with clients to understand their unique circumstances (i.e. previous good or bad legal experiences, medical distrust, health insurance and ID factors, travel preferences given the pandemic, etc.), assess their situation by asking the right questions, and critically decide which services aka “referrals” would best address their needs.

Outside of clinic, we are consistently maintaining contact with service providers and sites in the greater Los Angeles area to ensure that when we give a referral, we are giving our clients the most up-to-date information. We are also always on the lookout for new partnerships that can benefit our clients.

Overall, this committee has arguably been one of the most rewarding experiences during our time in MCP. We are so excited for this year’s Ref Chefs and to welcome y’all into the amazing world of Refatouille🥖🥘

Hi everyone! We’re Anna and Nene, the 2022-2023 MCP Advocacy Committee Chairs.

The Advocacy Committee (AV) has two main roles on-site. At the start of clinic, the Medical Coordinator and an AV member travel down the line where individuals wait to receive a meal from GWFC. AV members introduce MCP’s social and medical services to clients and direct them to the respective services (medical, social, truck, N/A). As start of clinic rush settles down, AV conducts historian interviews with clients, creating a welcoming and comfortable space for clients to share their stories. These conversations are meant to be casual: each one gives a unique and valuable glimpse into our clients’ interests and experiences.

Outside of clinic, AV uses clinic experiences and interviews to identify issues affecting our clients and spearhead projects that empower our clients and spread awareness. AV is also in charge of planning Sponsor a Home, Homelessness Awareness Week, and legislative campaigns.

Altogether, being part of AV is an opportunity to get an in-depth look into our clients’ experiences and create change in the community.
