Happy Latinx Heritage Month!
We had fun recreating Mexico’s Frida Kahlo and her beautiful flowers. We also made blue morpho butterflies, found all over Central and South America, but especially in Costa Rica where seeing one is good luck. Plus, some coloring with Latinx heroes Ellen Ochoa, Cesar Chavez, and Lionel Messi.

It was a crazy atmosphere for our Summer Reading Challenge Party. Thank you to Marquita Jordan for the wonderful and amazing face painting art. Kids also played hop scotch, made sun catchers, played Connect4, and colored.
Face painting by Marquita Jordan was made possible with the generous support of the Library Foundation of Los Angeles.
Thank you, L.A. Zoo!
We learned how the Los Angeles Zoo moved within Griffith Park during the 1960s. Can you imagine seeing elephants walking down the street? Or animals being pulled by a tractor? Kids also made nature booklets and felt some animal pelts and model skulls of wildlife you’d find in the park.
It’s time to paint!
Kids let their creative juices flow with watercolor paints. There was everything from flowers to sports teams to pop culture characters.
Creativity and art comes in many forms.
Thank you to Monica for teaching everyone to art of bookmaking. Using the running stitch and the pamphlet stitch, patrons made two books each. They learned that they can personalize their books using different mediums and bindery stitches to create their own works of art.

The art of henna is still popular, even after thousands of years. Katy DeBra discussed the history of henna, including that it has been found on mummies in Egypt. Educational, artful, and beautiful.

Chess is one of the oldest and most popular (and quietest) games in the world. Thank you L.A. Chess Ladder for teaching teens (and younger) the great game.

Did you know that the Jefferson Branch Library has a scanner?
Our sleepover friends show how easy it is to use the scanne. You can scan to copy and print, scan to your email, scan to a USB, scan text to audio, scan text translation, and scan to your smart phone. However, we suggest that scanning your face isn’t a good idea. (You’ll hurt your eyes.)
We had a great time playing library bingo. Besides hoping their favorite characters were on their cards, kids learned about the Central Library’s pyramid, the number of branches, and our fleet of book bikes.
Have you wondered about the art in our library? Read all about it the the library blog.
Art in the Library: Jefferson - Vassie D. Wright Memorial Branch Library The Jefferson Branch Library originally opened as a deposit station between 1912 to 1913 in the Soffel Drug Store at 2100 West Jefferson Street. Deposit stations reached underserved communities that did not have a full-service library near them and might be located in stores, fire stations, schools,...

More sleepover memories!
Hear the great sounds of indigenous music of North, Central, and South America from Martin Espino!
We celebrated El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children's Day/Book Day) with Martin Espino. He told the histories of various indigenous musical instruments and songs. One song he performed is about 10,000 years old so we don’t know what the words mean. Attendees got to play along on drums and even tortuga shells.
Thank you to the Library Foundation of Los Angeles for funding this program.
It’s a sleepover success!
Here’s a first look at our ten friends who spent a few days at the Jefferson Branch Library. Besides a storytime and a game of Jenga, there was fun to be had.
Stay tuned for more fun and shenanigans from the sleepover animals, including a cookie party to celebrate LosAngeles Public Library’s 150th birthday.
