The University Library Special Collections and Archives would like to honor and recognize Julian Nava, a true inspiration for our Los Angeles community, born in 1927 in Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles. At the age of 17, he joined the Naval Air Corps during World War II. He studied at East Los Angeles Community College and transferred to Pomona College. He later earned his doctorate at Harvard University in 1955. He was the first Latino elected to the Los Angeles Unified Board of Education and during the 1968 East LA Walkouts. Additionally, Nava was the first Mexican American U.S. Ambassador to Mexico in 1980.

Special Collections and Archives has been working on the "Cal State LA Public Officials Papers: Community Leaders of Color Breaking Barriers" Project which is funded by an Archival Grant from The John Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes Foundation. Cal State LA University Library

The University Library is central to the successful achievement of Cal State LA’s mission of cultivating and amplifying our students’ unique talents, diverse life experiences, and intellect through engaged teaching, learning, scholarship, research and public service. We seek to align our mission, vision and values with those of the University while also mapping an exciting and ambitious direction for the University Library’s future.

To be responsive to a university that is experiencing continuous change and increased engagement, the University Library will embrace strategic risk-taking as the path to innovation. We will embrace collaboration and diversity of thought as we respond to a changing information landscape, new and emerging technologies, and a greater focus on supporting academic success.

Four foundational strategic directions—discover, create, engage and transform—provide a framework that will inform our decision-making and guide the future direction of the University Library. These strategic directions do not attempt to convey all of the library’s activities. Rather, they identify areas of emphasis between 2017 and 2020 that will allow us to build on the library’s historical strengths, while transforming the library’s role as the platform for student success and faculty innovation, a hub for strategic partnerships, and a responsive and dynamic organization that adapts to changing user needs and expectations.

We invite you to join us as we move toward becoming a learner-centered, future-focused and intellectual commons for Cal State LA.
