We had a special guest visitor today during our Leadership Lab. Walter Switzer III, accompanied by his wife and daughter, formally presented the unit with a flag flown on the USS Farragut before it was decommissioned. His father (then Ensign Switzer) was stationed on the USS Farragut right after earning his commission from the NROTC unit at ! The NROTC unit was established at UCLA in 1938; ENS Switzer earned his commission in 1942. We thank the Switzer family for their generous and sentimental gift as well as their family’s service to this country.

Freshmen applicants applying for the 4-year NROTC Scholarship are encouraged to submit completed scholarship applications as early as possible to maximize opportunities for selection. MECEP and STA-21 selectees interested in pursuing their education at should contact the respective Officer Instructor as soon as their board results have been released but NLT 30 NOV.

We are saddened to report that over the weekend we learned ENSIGN Richard Baal was involved in a fatal motorcycle accident. ENS Baal graduated from UCLA and earned his commission in fall 2023. He was stationed at Naval Aviation School in Pensacola, FL. We send our condolences to ENS Baal’s family and friends. ENS Baal chose to be a warrior, taking the harder path, and we honor him as a warrior and with renewed and strengthened support to each other. We are forever grateful for his selflessness and compassion.

Our Chair’s Greatest Needs Fund is supporting the Naval Science Humanitarian Award, Alumni Network initiatives, morale-building, recruitment initiatives, and our Battle Study capstone program in Hawaii. Our Leadership Development Fund supports leadership conferences and also our Battle Study program expenses (because we have that many midshipmen and Marines!)
