Mercy For Animals

Mercy For Animals exists to end one of the greatest causes of suffering on the planet: the exploitation of animals for food.

Frankenchickens. Bred to Suffer. 08/25/2024

🚨 Will you take action on this important campaign?

In the name of profit, the chicken industry has selectively bred chickens to grow increasingly larger and faster despite the extreme suffering these ultrafast-growing birds endure.

Sign the petition calling on Whole Foods to publish a time-bound plan for fulfilling their pledge to stop sourcing meat from chickens who are bred to suffer.👇

Frankenchickens. Bred to Suffer. Tell Whole Foods it’s time to stop using Frankenchickens.

Ten years ago, Mercy For Animals’ cameras captured calves at a veal farm living on feces-covered floors in wooden crates barely larger than their own bodies. Often chained by the neck, they were unable to turn around or lie down comfortably for their entire lives.

The investigation garnered international media attention, and the Ontario and Quebec Veal Associations, as well as major retailers Loblaws, Sobeys, and Metro, agreed to ban veal crates.

This innocent, day-old piglet sits on a bare slatted floor on a pig farm, the remnants of his umbilical cord still attached. He will never step foot on grass or bask outside in the warm sun.

Conditions like these are standard in factory farms across the country, and the pork industry is desperately fighting to keep it this way. 💔

Help fight back by sharing this post and urging those around you to choose plant-based foods.

Breaking! Thanks to your unwavering support and advocacy, we just won the world’s first-ever shrimp welfare campaign! This monumental win will impact five billion animals every year.

In a landmark move, Tesco, the UK’s largest supermarket chain, announced that they will phase out “eyestalk ablation”—cutting off shrimps’ eyes—by 2026! The company will also ensure that 100% of their shrimp are electrically stunned, not immersed in ice slurry—an outdated and inhumane stunning practice.

This is not just a milestone for shrimp welfare. It’s a call to action for the entire seafood industry and a sign that change is possible! Together, we can ensure that all animals, regardless of size or species, are treated with the compassion and respect they deserve. Learn more here: https://mercyforanimals.org/blog/tesco-shrimp-welfare-progress/

Your support helps us drive campaigns that pressure companies to adopt meaningful animal welfare practices and educate consumers about kinder food choices. You can continue to support this work by making a gift today—every dollar helps create lasting change for animals!

Have you seen animal transport trucks on the highway?

According to an analysis, animal transport conditions are so horrific that more than 20 million farmed animals die each year before reaching the slaughterhouse. In summer, temperatures inside trucks rise to well over 100°F, and many animals suffer heat stress and heart attacks.

Please join Mercy For Animals in calling on the USDA and Department of Transportation to modernize U.S. animal transport laws! https://act.mercyforanimals.org/page/tell-usda-update-archaic-animal-transport-regulations/petition

New Study: Eating Processed Meat Linked to Higher Risk of Dementia 08/10/2024

DYK that eating processed meat is linked to increased risk of dementia?

A new large-scale study revealed that consuming two portions of processed red meat per week was linked to a 14% increased likelihood of reduced memory and thinking skills. But substituting a daily portion of processed red meat with nuts, beans, or tofu could reduce the risk of dementia by a significant 23%.

The chicken industry intentionally breeds birds to grow so unnaturally fast that, on average, they now reach 6.54 pounds in 47 days—six times faster than they did in 1925. But the chickens are still babies, and their immature bones struggle to support them. They often collapse and are unable to reach food and water.

Whole Foods promised to stop sourcing meat from these fast-growing breeds by 2024 but has failed to publish a plan for keeping their promise. 😠 Take action at MercyForAnimals.org/Frankenchickens

Opinion | Dogs Are the Best! But They Highlight Our Hypocrisy. 08/05/2024

Americans have more dogs than children and are spending lavishly on pets. But why do wee increasingly pamper our dogs, while accepting the torture of pigs?

"Farmed animals are just as capable of experiencing joy, social bonds, pain, fear and suffering as the animals we share our homes with."

Mercy For Animals President and CEO Leah Garces was quoted in this thought-provoking article by Nick Kristof in the The New York Times Opinion Section.

Opinion | Dogs Are the Best! But They Highlight Our Hypocrisy. While we increasingly pamper our dogs, we blithely accept the torture of the pigs we eat.
