During Disability Pride Month, we want to shine our resident spotlight on Mary Ann, a remarkable member of our community who has made incredible contributions!

Mary Ann, a proud Kentucky native and Day Spring resident of nearly 30 years, has been a passionate advocate for the rights of people with disabilities. She demonstrated her commitment by attending the State Capitol Annex for the 874K Disabilities Coalition Rally, where she actively lobbied for disability rights.

Beyond her advocacy, Mary Ann has generously volunteered her time at the humane society and Louisville Metro Animal House. Her favorite part? Spending time with the dogs, especially Alaskan Huskies and pugs!

When she's not volunteering, Mary Ann enjoys watching wrestling, with her favorite wrestler being Ryan Howe. She also has a love for music, particularly rock and roll and some country. Her favorite band is the iconic KISS!

When asked what she would like people to know about her, Mary Ann proudly shared that she is a "smart and intelligent woman."

Join us in celebrating Mary Ann and her wonderful contributions to our community during Disability Pride Month!

July is Disability Pride Month, a time to honor the unique talents, contributions, and resilience of individuals with disabilities. This month also marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), passed on July 26, 1990.

Disability pride means accepting and honoring each person’s uniqueness as a natural and beautiful part of human diversity. Disabled people are the largest and most diverse minority within the population, representing all ages, races, ethnicities, religions, and socio-economic backgrounds. Yet, they are often not recognized as equals or valued members of society.

A thriving society is one where everyone is included and it cannot truly flourish until all members are embraced. Day Spring participants are your peers, employees, and neighbors. At Day Spring, we believe that everyone deserves a path forward, regardless of their ability and we are committed to ensuring that people with intellectual disabilities are seen, heard, and valued.

Join us in celebrating Disability Pride Month and look out for posts detailing more information about this important month and inspiring stories from our own Day Spring community!

Shining a spotlight on Donna, who has been a beloved member of the Day Spring family for an incredible TWENTY-FIVE years!

Before joining us, Donna was a cashier at the local Winn Dixie. Her personality and genuine interactions with the residents caught staff's attention, and they immediately knew she would be a wonderful addition to the Day Spring team. Despite already working two jobs at the time, Donna joined Day Spring as her third job, bringing her dedication and hard work to our community.

Donna has worked in every Day Spring house except for Audubon Ridge and her meticulous attention to detail in medication administration has played a crucial role in improving our med admin systems. As a leader on the overnight shift, Donna holds her coworkers to a higher standard, ensuring the best care for our residents. Her commitment and eye for detail have made a significant impact on our team.

We are incredibly grateful for Donna's many years of dedicated service and are honored to have her as part of our Day Spring family. Donna you are truly a treasure, and we celebrate your dedication and passion. Thank you, for everything you do!

Fiesta Fun with Our Family Home Providers! 🌮🎨

This weekend, we had a fun, fiesta-themed party with our Family Home Providers and their families!

The dedicated caregivers with the FHP progran open their homes and hearts to adults with disabilities, making them family.

We spent the day deepening our relationships, bonding over delicious food, and enjoying painting projects.

Thank you to everyone who came out to party with us!

Meet Madison, the newest resident at our College for Living program. A passionate animal enthusiast, Madison adores horses and was excited to attend this year's Kentucky Derby with her family. Her love for animals also extends to dogs. She takes pride in her job at Pet Station Country Club, where she often sends staff updates about her favorite pups. Madison's affection for creatures doesn't end with furry friends—she amazed everyone last summer by catching a (harmless) snake with her bare hands!

When she's not with animals, Madison enjoys spending her days at Kentucky Kingdom or the Louisville Zoo, where she knows every ride and exhibit by name.

Madison is also committed to her health and fitness, practicing her cooking skills in the College for Living kitchen classes and swimming laps with her Special Olympics swim team.

Dedicated to gaining independence, she has recently started learning to drive and proudly earned her driver's permit! She is an intelligent and kind young woman with a wealth of wisdom to share. We are confident she will thrive as she moves towards greater independence.

We are incredibly grateful for the amazing group of volunteers from Humana who joined us on campus last week. They braved the heat to wash windows, revitalized our offices with fresh paint, and helped us get our mailers off to the post office. Their enthusiasm to tackle any task made for a fun and productive experience. Thank you, Humana for supporting your community!

We enjoyed a wonderful Juneteenth celebration on campus today! Thank you to all our staff who got involved and made the day memorable! 🖤❤️💚💛

06/19/2024

Today Day Spring honors Juneteenth as we spend the day in reflection, celebration, and learning. This important day commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and honors the resilience, strength, and enduring spirit of Black Americans. We hope you'll join us in learning more about this significant day and recognizing the struggles and triumphs of the past while acknowledging the work that still lies ahead.

What a bittersweet week it has been! We bid farewell to our first The College for Living graduate, Daniel, who has moved into his very own apartment. Armed with the life skills he acquired at CFL, he feels confident to live independently. While he may no longer be on campus, Daniel will always remain a cherished member of the Day Spring family and is continuing to work with program administrators to build an alumni network. We will miss you Daniel, but we are excited to see all that you will accomplish!

We are excited to announce that Day Spring has updated its mission statement to better reflect our growth and the diverse range of services we now offer. Our new mission statement is:

When Day Spring was founded, our primary focus was on providing residential services. However, over the past 30 years, we have expanded our offerings to include innovative programs like the College for Living, the Arts and Wellness Program, and the Family Home Provider program. As our organization has evolved, so too has our vision for the future.

We realized that our previous mission statement no longer fully captured the breadth of our work or the spirit of our community. We believe this new mission statement fully encompasses what we do, the services we provide, and the vision we have for our community. It captures our core values and the essence of our work, highlighting our dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.

Our new mission statement is:
Day Spring provides a path forward for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through services that cultivate hope, belonging, and community.

Thank you for being a part of the Day Spring family. Together, we create pathways of hope, belonging, and community for all those we serve.

Watch a short message from our CEO, Lauren Hays!

Our Horizon of Hope Gala is just TWO DAYS AWAY! 🎉 As we eagerly anticipate this exciting event, we want to take a moment to look back at the original Horizon of Hope comprehensive campaign. Launched publicly in 2005, this ambitious campaign aimed to physically expand the Day Spring campus and extend our services to even more individuals! Thanks to the incredible support from our community, the campaign was a resounding success, enabling us to thrive and grow into the vibrant organization we are today.
