It’s literacy week! Author Charlot Lucien visited our students today. He is the author of 5 storytelling CDs (in Haitian Creole and French), a poetry book, and two volumes of satirical caricatures. He relies on Haitian storytelling techniques to engage his audiences - call-an-answers, Haitian riddles as icebreakers, miming, and tropical props.

On Monday, April 8, the Moon will orbit between the Earth and the Sun, blocking the Sun for a period of time. The next time Lowell will experience a total solar eclipse will be on May 1, 2079, so this is a pretty big event.

In Lowell, the eclipse will begin at 2:15 p.m., peak at 3:29 p.m., and end at 4:38 p.m. While we are not in the path of totality, the Sun will be about 95% covered at the peak time here.

While it is an exciting occurrence, we urge you to stress to your children that it is very dangerous to look directly at the Sun, even during an eclipse when it doesn’t seem as bright. Harmful rays are still shining down and can permanently damage eyesight.

Ordinary sunglasses – even very dark ones – are not strong enough to protect your eyes. The only safe way to look at the eclipse is through special eclipse glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 standard (they will say this on the glasses or the packaging). There are many places that are selling “eclipse glasses” that do not meet this standard and therefore are not safe.

Additionally, do not use binoculars, a telescope, or a camera to view the eclipse if they are not also equipped with a solar filter, or their lenses will be damaged.

Thanks to our school’s art teacher, Ms. Maddie, for working with our students to create our book nook masterpiece!! Keep your eyes open for it in our lobby and feel free to grab a book to read with your child! 🫶 💚 📚

An amazingly talented group of 2nd grade students at the Greenhalge Elementary designed and painted their school’s BookNook, titled Starry Night!

This is one of our nearly 25 BookNook shelves located across the city.

Through this initiative, we’re able to distribute thousands of books in various languages to kids and families in Lowell at no cost to them.

Ms. Monica and Ms. Gio are so proud of our Survival English cohort! Looking forward to celebrating our families at their upcoming graduation on April 25th. Congratulations to all! 🎉

Today is World Autism Awareness Day! Shout out to all of the students in Lowell Public Schools with Autism. We see you and we love what you bring to our community. And special recognition to the teachers in our district who teach, love, relate to, and accept students with Autism every single day. We are constantly learning more about how the human brain works and about the different abilities each of us possesses and adapting to meet the needs of every student.
