Dr Nesson was asked to bring horses to Sun Prairie Senior Living to visit the residents during their Texas Theme week. Neumann, her mini and Venture, belonging to her friend and boarder made the trip and they were Rock Stars! She couldn't get over how calm they both were with the residents, they really seemed enthralled with the whole experience. It was really quite fun and rewarding to share them with everyone!

We have very exciting news to share. Please join us in welcoming Katie Neumann to the Irongate Equine Clinic team!👋

Katie grew up on a small dairy farm outside of Sauk City, WI. She fell in love with horses as a little girl and used to show hunter jumpers at local hunter jumper open schooling shows. Now in her free time she enjoy hanging out at the barn with friends and trail riding with her two rescue horses Dixie and Jethro.

Katie will work with all three of our veterinarians in the field assisting them with their patients and appointments. We look forward to you meeting Katie soon!

Summer is a great time of the year to be a horse owner but let's not forget that heat, aggressive insects, and drought-hardened pastures can really impact the health and comfort of our equine friends.

One of the side effect of the heat for some horses is the inability to sweat properly. This condition, called anhidrosis, is potentially dangerous for horses because it compromises their ability to thermoregulate even in weather that doesn’t seem that hot, and therefore puts them at higher risk of heat stress.

Anhidrosis is not fully understood yet; it is widespread in the hot and humid regions of the southeastern United States and the Gulf states, but it is also widely reported elsewhere during the summer and particularly during heat waves. If your horse has a high respiratory rate and does not seem to tolerate turnout on hot days, be sure to discuss it with your veterinarian.

Remember that administering unnecessary medications without consulting your horse doctor first could do more harm than good, as it puts your equine friend at risk of developing harmful side effects!

HOW AND WHY DO HORSES GET ULCERS? 🐴

HOW AND WHY DO HORSES GET ULCERS?

Equine gastric ulcers can affect any horse of any age. Up to 90% of racehorses and 60% of show horses, as well as non-performance horses and even foals are affected by equine gastric ulcers. Gastric ulcers result from the erosion of the stomach lining due to a prolonged exposure to the normal acid present in the stomach.

Unlike ulcers in humans, bacteria do not appear to cause equine gastric ulcers. Instead, this condition is often a man-made disease. Stall confinement alone can lead to the development of ulcers. A horse’s feeding schedule and high-grain diets can also contribute to the development of ulcers.

Stress, both environmental and physical, can increase the likelihood of ulcers, as can hauling, training, and mixing groups of horses. Strenuous exercise can decrease the emptying of the stomach as well as the blood flow, thus further contributing to the problem.

The treatment and prevention of gastric ulcers is directed at removing these predisposing factors, therefore decreasing acid production within the horse’s stomach. Prevention of ulcers is the key in helping your horse, as neutralizing the production of stomach acid is nature’s best antacid.

Please note that the only way to definitively diagnose ulcers is through a gastroscopy. An equine veterinarian should always be consulted in any case of suspected gastric ulcers to determine the best course of action and treatment for the individual horse.

Caring for your Horse in Extreme Heat — Irongate Equine Clinic 07/13/2024

The high temps have hit Wisconsin and our horses need a little extra help to stay cool & healthy.
😎

Caring for your Horse in Extreme Heat — Irongate Equine Clinic We’re looking at plenty of high heat index ratings over the next few days, and we want to make sure your horse is prepared for it. There are a few things you can and should do to protect your horse as they get used to this summer sun, so read on, and take care of yourself AND your horse.

07/12/2024

Make sure your equine friends are adequately protected from harmful UV rays. ☀️

The summer heat and sun won't be letting up any time soon, so make sure your equine friends are adequately protected from harmful UV rays. ☀️

Hot summer weather puts horses at risk not only for dehydration and heat stress but also the skin damage and discomfort that accompany a sunburn— just like humans.

A lot of equestrians love some chrome on a horse, but it's important to remember that those beautiful white markings and the non-pigmented pink skin underneath are more likely to suffer from sunburn, especially in areas where the skin is more sensitive — like around the eyes and the nostrils.

In addition to the pain and discomfort, horses that are prone to recurrent sunburn may also face other long-term consequences, like the increased likelihood of developing squamous cell carcinoma (a common cancer).

If your horse is susceptible to sunburn, contact your veterinarian for more information about sun damage and recommendations to keep your horse protected this summer.

The fourth is right around the corner! 🎆Here are a few helpful tips to keep your horse safe during fireworks.

The Fourth of July is almost here, and many horse owners are concerned about how their horses might react to loud fireworks. 🎆

In the graphic below are some tips to keep your pets and equine companions safe during the festivities.

If your horses are staying out overnight, now is a good time to check fencing and look for any hazards like rocks, branches, or holes that could lead to injury if an animal starts running. If you have a high level of concern about your horse's response, consult your veterinarian about the appropriateness of calming agents and sedatives in advance.

No matter what your plans are, please remember to practice safety and be considerate of the people and the animals living around you so everyone may enjoy the celebration.

Thank you to our Horse Owner Education Committee for providing this information.
