A mysterious respiratory illness is spreading among dogs and baffling veterinarians. Here’s what owners can do | CNN 11/21/2023

https://www.cnn.com/2023/11/20/us/mystery-dog-illness-spreading/index.html

As many of you may have seen in the national news, there is an emerging breakout of Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC, what many people call "kennel cough").
Some dogs simply get a long duration of cough (sometimes 8 weeks)and then recover. But some develop more serious illness, such as pneumonia. There is no specific etiology that has been identified at this time, but veterinarians everywhere are working on it and we hope there will be answers soon.

In the meantime, to help avoid your dog being exposed, we would recommend:
1. Avoid public areas where dogs congregate. Reduce the change of exposure until this is better understood.
2. If friends and family are visiting with their pets, be sure to ask them if their dogs are up to date on their respiratory vaccines, if they are having any symptoms of illness, and if their dogs could potentially have been exposed to other sick dogs (boarding, day care, grooming, etc)
3. Make sure your dog is vaccinated for respiratory disease. While this won’t completely prevent disease, it may limit the severity.
4. If your dog shows clinical signs including lethargy, cough, poor appetite, difficulty breathing, you should contact us immediately and seek medical care. And be sure to keep them out of day care or boarding.

Be safe, enjoy your holidays, and be sure to call us if you need us!

EXTINCTION ALERT! Look at these piles of paper records Georgia is barely balancing! Take a last good look. Because we’re phasing them out! Folks! We have lift off! We’re live with our Electronic Medical Records System! We’re working hard to make this the least painful transition possible but appreciate your patience as we perfect it. As you know last month we tried and faltered in making this happen, but that made us better when we finally did. Excited for all the benefits this will bring you (more on that to come). Special thanks to Georgia who was my co-pilot for this lift off.

Whelp. It was a tough decision after months of busting our butts, but we are temporarily postponing our transition to paperless. The infrastructure and support just didn’t feel stable enough to make us feel like we would be making life better for our clients if we pushed to meet a “Go Live” date just because we made it a goal. Instead we are taking a breath to get all the kinks worked out and will give it another try in a few short weeks. We’ll keep you posted! And thanks to all of you who have reached out with supportive words and understanding. You make every IT headache worth it!!!!

It’s happening! We’re going digital at ABAAH! We’re in the process of upgrading our medical records from our old school paper records to computerized! Honestly, it’s pretty scary for us- we’re good at vetting but maybe not this crazy computer stuff. But we know it will help us serve you so much better! We ask for your kindness and patience as we transition our ways over the next two weeks. We look forward to continuing to offer you wonderful and deeply connected care with all the benefits that technology has to offer.

We will be closed Monday June 19th. We encourage you to celebrate the strides that have been made but also recognize how far we have to go on this important day. Please plan accordingly if you have concerns about your pet or would like to pick up medication in advance. Thank you for joining us in honoring the diversity and continued struggles in our community.

Many of you have heard about the recent Parvovirus outbreak in Michigan. We are so sad for all those pups! But also glad to say most of our wonderful clients vaccinate their dogs for Parvovirus as part of their regular DAP (Distemper-Adeno-Parvovirus) regimen so your dogs should be protected. We're getting lots of worried calls and are happy to help you. You can also check out this news article from the AVMA to help rest your worries. And remember - Vaccines truly save lives! Nice job everyone!
