Friends, please keep our little one-eyed pony Odin in your thoughts today. He is currently on stall rest with a very sore foot. Odin like a lot of horses suffers from Cushing’s disease, which is a chronic, progressive condition in horses caused by an imbalance of pituitary hormones. Laminitis, (which is an inflammatory disease of the laminae in the horses hoof) is very common with Cushing’s disease and is very painful. We are waiting to find out what the cause of his pain is and will update you when we can.

This certainly is a pickle! Glad the horse wasn’t injured!

This evening YFD was dispatched to one of our more interesting calls in recent past. YFD was called to rescue a horse stuck on top of a gate. Crews used our cutters and spreaders, (typically used for vehicle extraction) to free this horse. The owners called right away for assistance and the horse was uninjured!

Our horses are at the heart of everything we do!

“Horses have the ability to think and plan ahead and are far more intelligent than scientists previously thought, according to a Nottingham Trent University study that analysed the animal’s responses to a reward-based game.

“The horses cannily adapted their approach to the game to get the most treats – while making the least effort.

“Previously, research has suggested that horses simply respond to stimuli in the moment, they don’t proactively look ahead, think ahead and plan their actions – whereas our study shows that they do have an awareness of the consequences and outcomes of their actions,” said the lead researcher, Louise Evans.”
