Musik to Grow

Musik to Grow is all about young children, parents, and teachers growing with music. Music classes here are educational, fun and purposeful.

Students develop their music potential, learn new ways to interact musically at home, and teachers learn to teach with music throughout the day. We offer early childhood music classes, group piano for children and adults, music therapy services and flute lessons. Choose from Musikgarten's full spectrum of studio classes:

Baby classes - 4 to 16 months
Toddler classes - 16 to 3 years

Today we celebrated 30 years of Musik to Grow and the closure of our Musikgarten classes. What a journey it has been! Teaching music has been so fulfilling. I am grateful to have had the privilege to teach and work with these wonderful individuals. We shared fond memories and heartfelt gratitude of the many children’s lives we have enhanced with music through the years. Thank you!!

After much consideration and prayer, our Musikgarten classes will cease to be offered beginning this fall. It is time for this chapter to close but Musik to Grow is NOT closing or going out of business!
Music therapy services will continue to be available for children with disabilities. Individual sessions, adapted keyboard lessons, as well as small group sessions are available at the Jennings Music location on Canton Road. If you are interested, or know of friends that could benefit from these services, click here:

Summer is a new fresh start with a change of routines and activities. I am aware that this is a different summer than ever before as we transition slowly to select activities in the community. We recognize the need for safe socialization and music making in the midst of such anxiety and unrest in our world today.

Our children and parents need to experience the laughter, joy and bond that music play with others brings.

Today I had an interesting conversation with a friend about a current TV program, The Food That Built America. It was about the origin of some businesses that we know today such as Hershey’s, M & M’s and KFC Chicken. Each of these businesses began with a recognition of a need, vision for success and the tenacity to see it through. This conversation brought me to reflect on the beginnings of Musik to Grow.

I began the program 28 years ago after the birth of my second baby girl, Amy. I saw a need for quality music classes to enhance learning center programs in Missouri. After moving to Georgia a couple years later and taking the Musikgarten training, I began teaching parent/child classes for babies through five-year-old’s. Did you know that through the years, Musik to Grow has taught weekly music classes for parents and their children in eight locations in Cobb County? What a journey this has been over many years!

- All children are musical.
- Music meets the needs of children.
- Music benefits the whole child, must be introduced early, and must involve the family.
- By using only the highest-quality educational resources and instruments, we can help deepen a child's appreciation for music and the natural world around him/her, building a foundation for life-long music making.
- Providing an appropriate musical experience and following a carefully sequenced approach to music reading allows a child to participate fully in musical experiences of all kinds.

The science behind why choir-singing is good for you | CBC Radio 01/30/2020

"Daniel Levitin, psychology professor at McGill University and author of This is Your Brain on Music, says group singing isn't just good for the soul — it's good for the body.

By analyzing the changes in people's brain activity when they sing together, he's come to the conclusion that feelings of belonging and mood elevation are biologically ingrained to surface with communal singing."

The Role of Music | UGA Cooperative Extension 01/23/2020

Does Music Make Us Smarter?

According to UGA, not exactly BUT
"Learning to play an instrument can have longer-lasting effects on spatial reasoning, however. In several studies, children who took piano lessons for six months improved their ability to work puzzles and solve their other spatial tasks by as much as 30 percent. Why does playing an instrument make such a difference? Researchers believe that musical training creates new pathways in the brain."

The Role of Music | UGA Cooperative Extension Children who grow up listening to music develop strong music-related connections in the brain. Some of these music pathways actually affect the way we think. Listening to classical music seems to improve our spatial reasoning, at least for a short time. And learning to play an instrument may have an...
