FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Season’s End for the St. Louis Blues Blind Hockey Club

ST. LOUIS, MO – The St. Louis Blues Blind Hockey Club wrapped up their 6th season a one week ago, today. This local nonprofit has been in partnership with the St. Louis Blues since 2018 and continues to be generously supported by Healthy Vision Association.

After the close of the 2023-2024 season last Saturday at Centene Community Ice Center, President and Founder, Jeff Vann, shares,” This season was especially fun because we launched our youth-focused initiative. While we are open to all ages, our club is looking to grow the 12 and under level.” Practices were held on Saturday mornings, September till March, from 8:20am to 9:40am. The ice split amongst the age groups for more individualized coaching and skill development. Most mornings, the younger skaters, coaches, and volunteers had the first 45 minutes to practice basic skills like skating, stopping, and stick handling, and the adult players joined the ice during the last 45 minutes to focus on specific drills, shooting, and scrimmages. All in all, the time on the ice was a success.

As the season came to a close and the Board for St. Louis Blues Blind Hockey team reconvenes to strategize for the 2024-2025 season, Vann replied, “It’s nice to see these kids smiling when they realize what’s possible when given the opportunity and it’s our hope to add to our current roster.”

How it all began...

Jeff Vann, President & Founder of St. Louis Blind Hockey Association, a local, nonprofit and 501©3 organization. The Board’s mission is to provide blind or visually impaired youths and adults the opportunity to participate fully in the sport of Blind Hockey. Our program focus is on the successful development of skating and hockey skills while emphasizing sportsmanship, teamwork, competition, and an overall love of the game. Our goal is to create an active hockey community for both recreational and competitive players with the skills and ability to participate in games regionally and nationally with other U.S. and Canadian Blind Hockey organizations.

As Vice-President of the St. Louis-based, nonprofit and 501©3, Spirit of Discovery Park, the 100% inclusive and ultra-accessible amusement park, greenhouse and ice rink for every BODY, especially those with special needs, the blind ice hockey opportunity presented itself in mid-June 2017. As a way to give back NOW, as the Board of SoDP continued to raise 35+ million for the amusement park, Jeff decided to undertake this opportunity; a blind ice hockey team.

After raising awareness through two, TRY BLIND ICE HOCKEY FOR FREE events, between June and November, Jeff was supported by the Board of Spirit of Discovery Park, to actively pursue support from local NHL team, The St. Louis Blues and received an overwhelming, positive response.

On January 18th, 2018 the St. Louis Blues hosted a Try Blind Ice Hockey event at Scottrade Center where the President and CEO of Business Operation, Chris Zimmerman, gave a compelling locker room speech, jerseys embroidered with the official St. Louis Blue Note were handed out to all blind athletes and Barrett Jackman, former Blues defenseman, along with several volunteers were on the ice for this event. Since this event, St. Louis Blind Hockey Association filed their 501©3 status with the Internal Revenue Services and is doing business as (DBA) St. Louis Blues Blind Hockey Club.
