Our Story

ZABS Place is a nonprofit thrift boutique that is addressing the critical shortage of employment opportunities for young adults with disabilities by providing jobs with personalized training. Located in Matthews, North Carolina, ZABS Place offers a distinctive selection of donated goods at great values, from basic household products to designer clothing as well as jewelry and other items crafted by our employees with special needs – and special talents.

Who We Serve
Our mission is to help young adults with disabilities harness their own special talents and prepare them to transition to rewarding careers and realize their dreams of leading purposeful lives. We work with young adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities ranging from autism and familial dysautonomia to visual and fine motor-skill impairment.

Our Vision
We envision a community where young adults with special talents can transition from high school to the adult working world with dignity. We foresee the day when special young adults are able to capitalize on their strengths, acquire essential job skills, realize their potential, and gain confidence interacting with their typically developing peers.

Why ZABS Place?
Unemployment and lack of career opportunity are chronic problems for young people with disabilities. In 2017 nationally, only 18.7 percent of persons with a disability were employed. With an estimated 66,000 adults with disabilities currently living in Mecklenburg County, ZABS Place seeks to shift the paradigm by assessing the abilities and skills of individuals and customizing training to harness their special talents.

While this sector of the population increases, opportunities remained stagnant and uninspiring. A paradigm shift was vital. We are inspired by uniqueness and excited by potential so we set out to create a model that offered a new perspective and focused on the interests and talents of these young adults.
