Medford Secures $750K Grant to Help Strengthen its Climate Resiliency

Funding will be used to support the Medford Connects project, which supports improving the City’s Emergency Preparedness

The City has secured a Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Grant for $750K from the state to continue the expansion of its Medford Connects project, announced Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn. The Medford Connects project will use this MVP funding to continue improving climate resiliency throughout the community.

Building upon three MVP grant rounds, this fourth round of funding secured by the Health Department will allow Medford Connects to strengthen Environmental Justice (EJ) and climate-sensitive populations by building community supports and increasing accessible communications. This funding will support the current Community Engagement Team, help formalize a network of community organizations invested in this mission, and create a virtual, centralized resource center.

“As the effects of climate change continue to impact many aspects of daily life, we’re working to create a more resilient community and the MVP grant funding has been critical to strengthening those efforts,” said Mayor Lungo-Koehn. “We have been able to build a robust Medford Connects program that will be able to support and engage communities before, during, and after climate emergencies.”

Awarded by the Healey-Driscoll Administration’s Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness program, which is administered by the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA), MVP grants support communities in identifying climate hazards, developing strategies to improve resilience, and implementing priority actions to adapt to climate change. Medford is one of 71 projects to have received action grant funding in the latest round of applications.

"Medford Connects has been working diligently since its creation in 2020 to close the gap that marginalized communities face during climate crises and other emergencies,” said Catherine Dhingra, Prevention and Outreach Manager. “We are proud to say that our project has become an example for other communities, and we look forward to continuing this work with our new funding round.”

Municipal Leaders Encourage All to “Be Kind” This Fall

From the Desks of Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn, Mayor Jen Grigoraitis, Mayor Gary Christenson, Town Manager Dennis Sheehan, and Town Manager Beth Rudolph

(MEDFORD) — Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn, Mayor Jen Grigoraitis, Mayor Gary Christenson, Town Manager Dennis Sheehan, and Town Manager Beth Rudolph released the following joint statement on encouraging stewardship of the Middlesex Fells Reservation:

As local government leaders, we can have a lot of competing priorities from moment to moment. But, even on our most stressful days, we are driven by a deep belief in the power of kindness to do good. Caring for what makes our communities special is a great part of any Town Manager or Mayor’s job, especially including standout assets like the Middlesex Fells Reservation.

The Middlesex Fells is the jewel of our region with gorgeous vistas, thrilling hikes, and opportunities for nature-lovers of all ages to enjoy the great outdoors. We are thankful to the DCR for the care they take in preserving this unique space and know they can’t do it alone.

We are joining together with DCR to encourage ourselves, and our fellow residents, to “Be Kind!” in the Fells this fall. Stewardship, or the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care, is a practice that everyone can be a part of. Our friends at DCR have a few easy tips to follow that make it simple to Be Kind!
• Listen for other people on trails and make space for others to pass;
• Keep dogs leashed outside of designated off-leash areas;
• Leave no trace of litter or waste; and
• Stay on the trails – on foot, paw, or bike.

Be on the lookout for more information about this campaign from official city and town social media, and don’t be afraid to get involved! With or , it’s easier than ever to share with others how easy it is to brighten someone’s day with kindness. You can also volunteer to be a Trail Adopter, attend an official Be Kind event, or learn more at https://www.mass.gov/guides/be-kind-massachusetts

It’s no secret that a little kindness can go a long way. We’re lucky to be the leaders of cities and towns known for their deep community roots and friendly neighbors. It’s our hope that no matter where our residents roam, they take that signature welcoming attitude with them. We are proud to be ambassadors along with the Department of Conservation and Recreation’s new campaign that encourages us to “Be Kind!” when out in nature.

Medford Hosting Electric Vehicle Showcase on September 14

Medford EV Showcase to take place at City Hall from 10am-12pm

(MEDFORD) — The City is hosting an Electric Vehicle (EV) Showcase on Saturday, September 14 from 10am-12pm in the City Hall parking lot, announced Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn. This event will showcase a variety of electric vehicles (including e-bikes and scooters) and give residents the chance to speak directly with owners to get more information on maintenance and usability.

This event is sponsored by Electrify Medford, which educates residents about available resources to make sustainable and money-saving changes in their own lives. Community members will have the opportunity to see the interiors of electric vehicles, talk about their pros and cons with their owners, and learn about what incentives are available, without being in a high-pressure sales environment. Representatives from Green Energy Consumers Alliance and Bluebikes will also be on hand to answer questions. This is an educational event to share information; no car dealers will be there.

“Electric vehicles are a great option for residents looking for a greener, more environmentally friendly way to navigate our City,” said Mayor Lungo-Koehn. “As the City works to make green transportation more convenient and accessible, we hope this will be an engaging and educational event for anyone thinking about making the switch.”

To meet goals laid out in the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan, Medford has been encouraging the transition to electric vehicles for both residents and the City-owned fleet, with an electric street sweeper in the Department of Public Works and hybrid vehicles in the Parking Department and Police Department. There are also currently 11 City-owned level 2 electric vehicle charging stations available to the public.

Learn more about Electrify Medford and sign up to speak one-on-one with an energy coach about your options at medfordma.org/electrify-medford.

Medford Seeking Applicants for Community Land Trust Working Group

Working group members are tasked with guiding the Community Land Trust study process and reviewing the consultant’s work

Application deadline is September 8

(MEDFORD) — The City of Medford is now accepting applications to join a working group that will guide the Community Land Trust feasibility study, announced Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn. This advisory group will help guide the study and eventually review the work done by the consultants related to a Community Land Trust.

Community Land Trust (CLT) is an independent, non-profit organization that acquires and holds land for the benefit of a community. In a CLT model, land is owned collectively by the community, while the homes on the land are owned by individual residents through long-term lease. This allows for affordable homeownership opportunities. The City is studying the feasibility of creating a CLT model in Medford.

The working group will meet monthly for the duration of the study, from September 2024 through June 2025. Along with guiding and reviewing the study, working group members will work with City staff to draft a mission statement, a financial analysis for CLT growth, and educational materials about CLT’s for the community. All meetings will be held virtually and there will be one in-person community open house to be held in the late winter.

The working group may potentially be comprised of policy officials, community leaders, members of housing advocacy groups, board members of the Affordable Housing Trust and Community Preservation Committee, representatives from Community Development Corporations, real estate agents, banking professionals, project managers, and interested residents. Individuals with the experience and background mentioned above are strongly encouraged to apply.

This working group is advisory, has no voting powers, and is not subject to open meeting law. The study, funded by a state grant, is being led by JM Goldson LLC.

If interested, please complete the CLT Study Working Group Interest Form by September 8, 2024: https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form/90ebb4fcbe10453592bd686c97df30b0. Physical copies are available at the Office of Planning, Development, and Sustainability, Room 308 at Medford City Hall, 85 George P. Hassett Drive.
