A researcher in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Memphis has received a $500K grant from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development as part of an extensive Transportation Network Growth Opportunity initiative that will inject nearly $3 million into seven research and development projects across the state.

Sabya Mishra, who is also director of Center for Transportation Innovations Education and Research (C-TIER) at the UofM, will lead the project with partners Abhishek Dubey from Vanderbilt University, Candace Brakewood from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and Mina Sartipi from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

The music therapy program at the University of Memphis has earned accreditation from both the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), positioning the UofM as a regional leader in the emerging field of music therapy education and research.

The newly accredited program, housed within the University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, aims to prepare students for careers in this rapidly growing healthcare profession.

“This propels the Scheidt School of Music to the forefront of what is happening today within the arts and health-care communities,” said Debra Burns, the new dean of the College of Communications and Fine Arts and a world-renowned pioneer in the field of music therapy. “It is this kind of forward thinking that drew me to the UofM and I am thrilled to continue this research that will help our community and elevate our University.”

The African art collection at the Art Museum of the University of Memphis has grown recently. It has expanded so much, in fact, that the collection of over 800 items is now on display through Saturday, Sept. 14.

"It’s not a conventional interpretive exhibition," said Leslie Luebbers, director of the Art Museum. "Instead, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see everything, including for us, as we plan the reinstallation of the expanded African galleries."

It's hard to believe summer break is almost over as the first day of class is only 𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗛 away! We couldn't be more excited to have our campus full of students again 💙

The day their daughter Ashleigh told them she had decided to attend the University of Memphis, Greg and Sharon Corley were overjoyed. Sharon, a UofM graduate, grew up in Dyersburg, Tennessee, and knew she wanted to go to college in a bigger city that wasn’t too far from home.

“My mother always took my sister and me to Memphis to shop and eat and I loved the city vibe,” Sharon said. “I believed Memphis would have more opportunities for a career after college, but I only knew one other friend attending the University when I started, so it was quite a leap of faith for me.”

Reminiscing about her time at the UofM, Sharon immediately began planning for Ashleigh’s dorm room — checking out organizations for her to join, finding tailgate locations and everything else an excited alumni parent would do. After all, the Collierville residents would only be about 30 minutes away from their daughter and the campus they’d grown to love.
