Ida B. Wells-Barnett was a prominent journalist, activist, and researcher, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In her lifetime, she battled s*xism, racism, and violence. As a skilled writer, Mrs.Wells-Barnett also used her skills as a journalist to shed light on the conditions of African Americans throughout the South. In 1893, Mrs.Wells-Barnett, joined other African American leaders in calling for the boycott of the World’s Columbian Exposition. The boycotters accused the exposition committee of locking out African Americans and negatively portraying the black community.

In 1895, Mrs.Wells-Barnett married famed African American lawyer Ferdinand Barnett. Together, the couple had four children. Throughout her career Wells-Barnett, balanced motherhood with her activism.

Mrs.Wells-Barnett traveled internationally, shedding light on lynching to foreign audiences. Abroad, she openly confronted white women in the suffrage movement who ignored lynching. Because of her stance, she was often ridiculed and ostracized by women’s suffrage organizations in the United States. Nevertheless, Mrs.Wells-Barnett remained active the women’s rights movement. She was a founder of the National Association of Colored Women’s Club which was created to address issues dealing with civil rights and women’s suffrage.

Langston Hughes was a central figure in the Harlem Renaissance, the flowering of black intellectual, literary, and artistic life that took place in the 1920s in a number of American cities, particularly Harlem. A major poet, Hughes also wrote novels, short stories, essays, and plays. He sought to honestly portray the joys and hardships of working-class black lives, avoiding both sentimental idealization and negative stereotypes. As he wrote in his essay “The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain,” “We younger Negro artists who create now intend to express our individual dark-skinned selves without fear or shame. If white people are pleased we are glad. If they are not, it doesn’t matter. We know we are beautiful. And ugly too.” Hughes purposefully mixed his own personal experiences into his work, setting him apart from other major Black poets of the era. Hughes turned his poetry outward at a time in the early 20th century when Black artists were increasingly turning inward, writing for an insular audience. Hughes wrote about Black history and the Black experience, but he wrote for a general audience, seeking to convey his ideas in emotional, easily-understood motifs and phrases that nevertheless had power and subtlety behind them. Hughes incorporated the rhythms of modern speech in Black neighborhoods and of jazz and blues music, and he included characters of "low" morals in his poems, including alcoholics, gamblers, and prostitutes, whereas most Black literature sought to disavow such characters because of a fear of proving some of the worst racist assumptions. Hughes felt strongly that showing all aspects of Black culture was part of reflecting life and refused to apologize for what he called the "indelicate" nature of his writing. He is “Black History”

The brutal, merciless beating of Mr. Tyre Nichols is nothing short of inhumane. This type of violence and abuse of power cannot and should never be tolerated.

We are sickened as a chapter by what happened. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Nichols family as they deal with this tragic loss.

We are demanding that every former officer involved are held accountable.

Here’s something that you probably didn’t know about Steele Hall, the oldest building at LeMoyne-Owen College. It was designed by the architectural firm, “Tandy & Foster”. The firm was founded in 1908 by one of the founders of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Jewel Vertner Woodson Tandy and George Washington Foster. Tandy was the first African-American architect licensed by the State of New York and Foster was among the first African-American architects licensed by the State of New Jersey in 1908, and later New York in 1916. They completed the construction of the building in 1914. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 23, 1979. It also is included in the LeMoyne College Historic District, also on the National Register. The NRHP Reference number is 79002481.

In short, one of our fraternity’s founders designed the oldest building on campus.
