The good news just keeps on coming 😊 Congratulations to John P. Freeman’s very own, Bobby Calvin III. Bobby won County Mayor Lee Harris’ “Do the Write Thing” essay contest. He secured 1st place out of 400 plus students county-wide. Bobby is now the National Male Ambassador and will have a chance to visit Washington, DC this summer to have dinner with the President.
Bobby is an 8th grade Scholar Athlete, who participates in football, basketball, and track. He also holds the Title as Mr. JPF and is a member of the National Junior Honor Society. We are super excited about Bobby’s achievements this year and can’t wait to follow him on his high school journey.

Evan is a current 7th Grader at John P. Freeman who ran a very competitive service campaign against 16 student competitors nationwide to win his national office! Evan is a member of the National Beta Club, National Junior Honor Society, Future Leaders of STEM, The Pride of Whitehaven Band, and Mensa International. We are proud of Evan’s newest accomplishment and look forward to him leading the charge to elevate students’ voices at the national level this upcoming year!

At JP Freeman, our 1st - 7th grade scholars got to party with a purpose today as they planted and brainstormed ideas with Mr. Payne for next year’s learning garden projects and how to get more students involved. Our first Garden Day Party was a success! Thank you to the Jazz Band, Ms. Perry, The Beta Club members, Mrs. Thompson, Dr. Roberson, Mr. Walker, Dr. Hood, Mrs. Rogers, Ms. Rhabb, and Mrs. Gooden for helping to make this event a true success.

Come see the amazing transformation and learn more about all the exciting ways this cozy area is making space for change at JP Freeman. TCAP TESTING VOLUNTEERS The TN Ready assessment will be administered April 15-May 3 for students in Grades 2-8. We will need volunteers to serve as test proctors from 8:00 A. M. until 11:30 A. M. each day. If you are willing to volunteer to assist us, please complete the form below.

Attention Parents and Students! In case you missed it…there are 5 Days remaining until TCAP testing starts. This week, students are allowed to come out of uniform if they dress in the daily TCAP themes created by Student Council.
The John P. Freeman Optional School Band recently participated in the annual West Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association's Concert Festival. For the third year in a row, the band received superior ratings. This year, the band received superior ratings in all captions, from all judges, earning the American School Band Director's Association ASBDA Award of Distinction in Concert Performance. The award is earned by approximately 15-20 bands across Tennessee each year. The John P. Freeman Optional School Band is the first middle school band in Memphis Shelby County Schools’ history to receive this honor.
Congratulations to John P. Freeman Optional School for earning back-to-back “Reward School Designation” status from the TDOE (2021-2022 & 2022-2023). The faculty and students were recently rewarded for their hard work by celebrating with the “Beating the Odds” pep rally and treated to a special lunch catered by Draper’s and Moe’s Southwest. Follow us on our journey as we strive for a 3-Peat in academic performance this 2023-2024 year. Thank you to Mr. Andrew Banyon and Dr. Nico West for rewarding our students and teachers financially for their hard work.

In honor of black history month, the JP Freeman Fine Arts and STEM Departments decided to do an ode to black cinematography and stage musicals by conducting a modern-day adaption of the iconic show, The Wiz.

John P. Freeman Optional School, a 2008 and 2016 recipient of the U.S. Department of Education's No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Blue Ribbon Award is the only all Optional School for grades one through eight in Shelby County Schools. Students benefit from continuity and seamless transition between grade levels that a first-through-eighth-grade school provides.
With a focus on Enriched Academics and College Preparatory programs, John P. Freeman provides students with the rigor they need to prepare for high school and post-secondary studies. At John P. Freeman, the coursework is accelerated, expectations are high, and the curriculum is designed to stimulate creativity and develop critical thinking skills. Students are encouraged to be self-motivated, practice self-discipline, and maintain a positive attitude toward school and learning. To meet the needs of students with diverse learning styles, the faculty offers frequent opportunities for individual and group projects, research, seminars, and field trips. Homework assignments are designed to help reinforce, broaden, and expand the curriculum.
