Urevbu Contemporary is pleased to present RE(de)FINED, a solo exhibition of the
recent paintings of Nigerian artist Johnson Uwadinma. Uwadinma reflects on the
fraught, but integral relationship between humans and nature that is informed by
his experiences in the Niger Delta, such as oil spills, pollution, and the
consequences of climate change, The tensions between abundance, life,
fecundity, and degradation, waste, and environmental disasters are the thematic
concerns of RE(de)FINED The human form is central to Uwadinma’s practice, as
he considers humanity’s stewardship of natural resources, for better and for
worse.

Alluring and enigmatic, Uwadinma’s vibrant paintings brim with texture and pattern. In this new body of work, Uwadinma has added oils and collage to his media, creating an even greater sense of texture and depth as he navigates the interplay of surface and image.
His compositions present stylized human figures who are elegantly-comported, muscular, and often heavily-patterned with intentionally unintelligible letters and forms. Through bold forms and intriguing symbols, he contemplates memory and history and how both may powerfully shape narratives. In Uwadinma’s paintings, the body is a site upon which centuries of social, political, and environmental
history are inscribed.
