Although Memphis Light, Gas and Water has been in existence since 1939, its parent companies started more than 100 years ago. MLGW and the services we provide have come a long way since our beginnings not long after the Civil War. The city's first utility company was the Memphis Gas Light Company, formed in 1852. The Water Tapping Contest was held at the South Service Center this morning. Four teams competed for a chance to represent MLGW at the KY/TN Water Professional Conference tapping contest in Louisville, KY September 9-11th. For the second year in a row Team Two and a Half Men won. Congrats to everyone who competed!

5 tips to keep your utility costs as low as possible:
1. Clean or replace your A/C filter.
2. Set your thermostat to 78° and turn it up higher at night or when you’re not at home.
3. Caulk and weatherstrip your windows and doors to keep cool air inside.
4. Close doors and vents in rooms no one uses.
5. Block the sun by shutting blinds and closing curtains.

Water makes up around 70% of the Earth’s surface. Can you guess how much of that is fresh water? Only 3%! And according to NASA only 1% of that water is readily available (the other 2% is tied up in glaciers and ice sheets).
August is national water quality month – a perfect time to think about things we can do to keep that 1% clean and drinkable.
• Wash your car at a car wash. It saves water and prevents toxic chemicals from being flushed down storm drains.
• Pick up after your pet. Animal waste is full of nitrogen and bad for aquatic life.
And dispose of hazardous household waste (oven/toilet cleaner, oil-based paint, fertilizer, electronics, flammable liquids, etc.) correctly. Shelby County’s Hazardous Waste Facility is located at 6305 Haley Road. Visit shelbycountytn.gov/439/Household-Hazardous-Waste for hours of operation.

MLGW’s Downtown Community Office, 245 S. Main St., will be open to assist the general public with billing inquiries payments and screen utility assistance applications for qualified customers from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2024.
Utility assistance funds are available for qualifying customers. If you are eligible for LIHEAP assistance, please come to MLGW Main Community Office on Saturday, August 17, between 8 a.m. and noon. Representatives from the Shelby County Community Services Agency will be available to help with LIHEAP applications. Visit shelbycountycsa.org/utility-assistance/ to see the kinds of documentation needed to apply. Agents from MIFA (Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association), United Way of the Mid-South, 211 Memphis Public Libraries will also be at the downtown office to provide information on other resources.
