William and Flora Hewlett Foundation
Advancing ideas and supporting institutions to promote a better world.
The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation is a nonpartisan, private charitable foundation that advances ideas and supports institutions to promote a better world. For 50 years, we have supported efforts to advance education for all, preserve the environment, improve lives and livelihoods in developing countries, promote the health and economic well-being of women, support vibrant performing arts, strengthen Bay Area communities and make the philanthropy sector more effective.
We believe the arts are essential for people and communities to thrive and are dedicated to supporting artists in the Bay Area. In response to increasing economic and social challenges, our Performing Arts Program is expanding its support to artists through increased funding and a more holistic approach to their well-being.
Program Officer Adam Fong shares the details of our renewed efforts to ensure Bay Area artists and culture bearers both benefit from and shape the services, policies, and practices that most impact their creative agency and livelihood:
Creative conditions: Expanding our support for Bay Area artists The Hewlett Foundation has supported the arts in the San Francisco Bay Area since its inception. We believe the arts are essential for individuals and communities to thrive and that artists are the cornerstone of cultural practices that enrich our lives and the region. Our partners at Humboldt Area Foundation just launched the first-of-its-kind Klamath River Fund! The fund, which launches with over $10 million, will support local efforts to restore the landscape and communities around the Klamath River. We’re proud to support this work bringing Tribal and rural communities together to lead and shape the region’s future.
Our Andrea Keller Helsel said, “It’s a new model for how philanthropy can be a partner in the longer-term work of healing nature and communities. Dam removal was only the first step; now we will see the transformations that are possible when Tribal and rural communities are resourced to come together and co-create a new vision for the region.”
