New This Week!
The Mighty Red by Louise Erdrich

In Argus, North Dakota along the Red River, Gary Geist, a terrified young man set to inherit two farms, is desperate to marry Kismet Poe, a lapsed Goth. Surrounding the wedding are a group of figures including Hugo, a gentle giant in love with Kismet and ready to be a homewrecker, and Kismet’s mother, Crystal, who hauls sugar beets for Gary’s family and worries about the future. This tender novel of hallucinatory mourning traces the slow pace of human time, set against the speed of climate change and the 2008 financial crisis, as the members of this starkly beautiful prairie community reckon with powerful forces seeking to upend their way of life.

New This Week!
The Message by Ta-Nehesi Coates

Coates, drawn by his fascination with how the stories we tell shape and often distort our realities, visits Africa for the first time. In Senegal, in what becomes a reckoning for his Afrocentrist upbringing, he feels split between the modern day city and mythic kingdom in his mind. Returning to the states, he meets a teacher whose job is threatened due to teaching one of his books and meets her supporters who have been largely mobilized by recent social movements. Finally, in the third and longest of the interlocking essays, he travels to Palestine and experiences firsthand the devastating gap between myth and reality. Throughout, Coates demystifies the destructive power of nationalist narratives and urges readers to seek out the liberating power of the truth.

New This Week!
The Bog Wife by Kay Chronister

The Haddesley family has tended a cranberry bog for time immemorial, and has in turn received a “bog-wife” each generation to further the family line. When the bog refuses to hold up its end of the bargain, the cultish system begins to crumble. Still grieving the disappearance of their mother five years prior and facing an unknown future, the five disparate siblings struggle to find a way forward. Wenna, the only sibling who has experienced the outside world, urges the family to abandon their patrimony, even as the others attempt to resuscitate it. Incorporating elements of eco-horror and filled with psychological drama, the novel questions what is knowable about a family’s past and when it is time to move forward.

New This Week!
The Empusium by Olga Tokarczuk

A century after the publication of The Magic Mountain, the Nobel laureate lays claim to Thomas Mann territory in this new retreat horror. It’s the eve of World War I and Mieczysław, a student suffering from tuberculosis, arrives at Wilhelm Opitz’s Guesthouse for Gentlemen. As the sanatorium residents imbibe on the hallucinogenic local liquor and discuss the great issues of the day (Will there be war? Does the devil exist?), disturbing things begin to happen in and around the guesthouse. With social commentary as chilling as any occult presence, Mieczyslaw attempts to unravel the truths within himself and the mystery of the sinister forces outside. Little does he know, they have already chosen their next target.

New This Week!
Intermezzo by Sally Rooney

Peter, a suave Dublin attorney, and Ivan, an awkward former chess prodigy, are grieving the recent death of their father. After twenty-two-year-old Ivan defeats nine opponents at a simultaneous exhibition in rural Ireland, he begins a love affair with the venue’s curator, a woman in her thirties emerging from her own turbulent past. Peter is dating a college student ten years his junior, but still feels an enduring connection to Sylvia, his best friend and former lover. Through these nontraditional relationships that have become her trademark, Rooney uses her rhythmically direct and propulsive style to delve into what truly pulls on the heartstrings of her generation.

New This Week!
Bone of the Bone by Sarah Smarsh

This collection of essays examines working class life to offer an incisive critique of the challenges that define our times. Ranging in style from personal to journalistic (and everywhere in between), she uncovers the economic conditions and political rhetoric that engender much of our misunderstanding and discrimination. Covering such topics as the socioeconomic significance of dentistry, the criminalization of poverty and the fallacy of “red” and “blue” states, Smarsh creates perspective-shifting arguments that are essential additions to our contemporary civic discourse.
