Happy June 🌞
June is Aphasia Awareness Month. Roughly 2 million people in the US have aphasia, but nearly 85% of Americans have never heard of it! 😳
Aphasia often follows a stroke or brain injury and is defined as a difficulty with communication including:
-Talking
-Reading
-Writing
-Using numbers
-Understanding when others speak
Aphasia does not affect a person’s intelligence! It affects the ability to communicate through language but NOT the thoughts themselves!
When communicating with someone that has aphasia:
-have the person’s attention and minimize background noise
-speak at a normal level
-engage in normal activities
-encourage independence
-give the person time to speak
-RESIST THE URGE TO COMPLETE THEIR SENTENCES
For more information on communication tips and aphasia visit:
Homepage - The National Aphasia Association Aphasia is an acquired communication disorder that impairs a person's ability to process language, but does not affect intelligence.
REMINDER:
Our office will be closed on Monday May 27 in honor of Memorial Day!
We will reopen Tuesday May 28 at 8:00am.
🇺🇸 Have a safe weekend 🇺🇸
Hello May!
🦓 Welcome to Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and Hypermobilty Spectrum Disorder (HSD) Awareness Month! 🦓
These are a group of connective tissue disorders created by genetic changes which can cause:
-joint hyper-mobility
-skin hyper-extensibility
-tissue fragility
There is no treatment available except supportive management of symptoms.
1 in 5000 patients may have EDS or HSD, which makes these disorders rare. Because of this, many patients with EDS/HSD refer to themselves as zebras. 🦓
For more information and to find out why the zebra 🤔, visit:
Why the Zebra? - The Ehlers Danlos Society People with the Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) often identify themselves as zebras.

April 14-20 is STI (sexually transmitted infection) week! The goal of this week is to raise awareness about STIs including:
-how they impact lives
-reduce STI related stigma, fear and discrimination
-ensure people have the tools and knowledge for prevention, testing and treatment
1 in 5 people in the US have an STI with half of new STIs occurring among 15-24 year olds. There are more than 20 different types of STIs including but not limited to:
-Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
-Herpes
-Syphilis
-Hepatitis
-Gonorrhea
-Chlamydia
-HIV
(CDC recommends HIV testing for all patients ages 13-64)
While abstinence is the most reliable way to protect yourself from an STI, the CDC also recommends implementing “Talk. Test. Treat.” to protect yourself and your sexual partners.
For more information on STIs, STI testing and “Talk. Test. Treat.” visit:

☘️ Hello March ☘️
March is National Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Month 🧠 and this week is Brain Awareness week! (March 11-17)
Every 9 seconds in the US, someone sustains a brain injury. 😔 These injuries affect how a person thinks, acts and feels! Symptoms and impacts of brain injuries can vary greatly and affect both the survivors and their support network.
There are different types of brain injuries and no 2 injuries are exactly the same. Remember: a person with a brain injury is a person first! 🫶

We are at the end of Heart Failure Awareness Week (Feb 11-17)
Heart failure 😢 is a progressive injury to the heart muscle that’s gradually causes loss of ability to pump enough blood 🩸 to the body.
There are 2 types of heart failure but both cause the body to hold on to too much fluid. This is called congestion (or congestive heart failure).
Symptoms can be subtle and are often mistaken for normal aging. Common symptoms include:
* Breathing difficulties
-shortness of breath from simple activities
-needing to use 2 or more pillows to prop up at night
-exercise intolerance
-pink or blood tinged mucus with cough
* Fatigue
* Cold arms/legs
* Edema of the legs
* Increased need to urinate at night
Heart failure is certainly life altering but with appropriate management, patients are able to maintain a consistent quality of life for longer periods of time. 🥰
Understanding your condition is crucial!!

🎊Welcome to January and 2024!!!🎊
January is Cervical Health Awareness Month. So we will be focusing on cervical cancer and HPV (Human Papilloma Virus).
Approximately 1400 American women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year! However, with vaccination and screening, it is preventable.
Current guidelines from the USPSTF (U.S. Preventive Services Task Force) for cervical cancer screening are:
-Ages 21-29 PAP every 3 years
-Ages 30-64 PAP every 3 years or PAP with
HPV very 5 years
In the US, there are over 14 million new HPV infections each year!! 😳 Some of strains of HPV cause warts but some cause cancers, including cervical and head/neck cancers. Vaccinations provide protection from the strains that cause cancer. The current 💉 vaccination recommendations are:
-HPV between age 11-12 plus 1 booster (2 total)
-if over 15, 2 boosters are needed (3 total)
For more information on cervical health, including HPV, cancers and screening, visit:

Hello September!
🍁 That means it’s almost FALL 🍁
September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. 1 in 5 children are considered obese. 🙁
Childhood obesity can be affected by many factors, not just eating patterns. Genetics, physical activity levels and sleep routines are also contributing factors. Overweight kiddos are at a higher risk of:
-asthma 🫁
-sleep apnea 😴
-type 2 diabetes 🩸
-heart disease 🫀
-bone/joint problems 🦴🦵💪
There is no 1 solution for childhood obesity but parents/caregivers/families can help by setting lifelong healthy habits such as:
👉 adopt healthy eating patterns with.
Vegetables 🥦🥒🥕🫑🥬
Fruits🍎🍓🍉🍋🍑
Whole grains🍞🥖
Lean protein🥩🍗
And replace sugary drinks 🙅 with milk🥛 or water 💧
👉 move more as a family! 🏃♂️🏃♀️ Children should have 60 minutes of physical activity daily
👉 set consistent sleep routines (even on weekends!!!)
•children ages 6-12 need 9-12 hours of sleep
•children 13-18 need 8-10 hours of sleep
👉 replace screen time 📱🖥️📺 with family time! Too much screen time can lead to poor sleep, weight gain, poor mental health and lower grades in school.
