So this morning was pretty. These are the stills.

Lena was raised by an anxious mom who made her responsible for managing her emotions.

Anytime something stressful happened (even minor things like her having to return something to the store) she would lash out at Lena. “Lena, your room needs to be spotless now!” Or “you’re so ungrateful for all I do for you!” as she played.

She learned to walk on eggshells.

Lena’s mother wasn’t aware of it but she was conditioning her to “fix” her feelings. By 12 Lena was hypervigilant, over-aware of her moms moods and energy to stay safe.

Lance, her boyfriend, is laid back like her father. Sometimes he gets quiet or feels low after work. Lena can’t tolerate it. She’s learned other people’s negative emotions as a threat to her own well-being. “Are you ok?” Lance would say yes, but Lena used to managing her mother’s emotions, would keep pushing. “Are you SURE everything is ok?”

Lance feels frustrated and smothered. “I told you I am ok. Stop asking” Lena goes right into fight or flight. His tone feels critical and she responds with “what is your problem?!”

Lena never leaned emotional boundaries. She didn’t get the opportunity to witness a stable adult who could just be in their own mood then eventually self regulate. She projects her mother into Lance and mistakenly believes his mood is something to change or fix.

Lance doesn’t know Lena has had to be the emotional manager of her home since she was a child. Being asked if he’s ok brings up shame or a feeling that something is wrong with him. He just wants to be left alone to self regulate and have the mood pass.

He wants it to be ok for him to not be happy and engaged without feeling like it’s something to fix

I just had to share. It’s so cute.

Late last night, Myles went on & on about how he had to be twins with a boy in his class for Twin Day because they look exactly the same- same eyes, same hair.

He was adamant that they were identical. So after the kids went to bed I headed to Walmart at 9pm to get matching outfits.

Their teacher sent me this picture today. My heart melted. Obviously two very different children, but Myles didn’t see that.

Wouldn’t the world be such a better place if we could all view it through the eyes of a couple 5yr olds♥️
