RIDIN' SOLO: INTRODUCING YOUR MUSIC
THERAPY VISION TO A PEDIATRIC HOSPITAL
“Starting a new music therapy program or position at a pediatric hospital can be fulfilling, inspiring, and challenging all at once! Board-certified music therapists Lainey Raab and Mackenzie Mondek will share their experiences building a brand new music therapy program within an interdisciplinary team and discuss themes such as evaluating hospital needs, providing staff education, wearing different "hats”, running a Sophie's Place space, and developing your therapeutic vision. Participants will leave with an understanding of how to prioritize music therapy and administrative needs, how to promote services and generate referrals, and how to provide a well-rounded framework for you and your hospital team. Please bring any questions you may have!”
Every week between now and the symposium we will be previewing a new presentation so be sure to stay tuned! 🎶

✨ How can I know if my music therapist is board-certified?✨
Every country has its own process and requirements for becoming an accredited music therapist, but here is how it works in the United States.
Music therapists are medical professionals and so it is important that they receive an education and are board-certified!
It should also be noted that some music therapists have completed equivalency programs in college or earned their undergraduate degree in another field and later earned a Master’s degree in music therapy. These are important and equally valid paths to entering the music therapy field!
Have we mentioned that we love the ocean drum?! 😍🌊🐠🥁

We’re excited to announce our internship take-over ✨this Friday✨ with Chloe Carroll!
Here’s a little bit about her! ⬇️
Chloe is an intern at Atrium Health WFBH Levine Children's Brenner Children's Hospital and today marks the halfway point in her internship! (3 months!🎉)
Chloe is studying music therapy at Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina.
Her favorite candy is black licorice jelly beans. 🙂
When describing her favorite memory in Sophie’s Place as well as the impact of Sophie's Place on patients and families, she said:
“My favorite memory of Sophie's Place has been participating in our "Swiftie Experience" that my supervisor planned. We had many different patients, families, volunteers, and staff from across the hospital all come together to sing, dance, make crafts, and show what a great space we have to offer.
Over the past three months, I have been able to see how Sophie's Place serves as a safe place for patients and families to escape the stressful hospital environment and step into music. I have seen more smiles, heard more giggles, and done more dancing in this place over anywhere else in this building. Music is alive in these rooms, and I get a chance to be a witness of the power of music therapy.” 💛🦋
Thank you so so much for your visit, Noah Kahan! 💛
✨ Let’s talk about the four methods of music therapy! ✨
How do you use these principles to make music in your own life?

Music & Meaning in Pediatric Legacy Work
“This presentation will define legacy work and identify common goals for a music therapist working in the pediatric setting. Presenters will discuss various legacy interventions that have supported patients and families in telling their story through music, both throughout their medical journeys and when preparing for end of life, such as long-term songwriting projects and end-of-life lullabies. The presentation will close with a brief discussion on how self-care factors into legacy work and suggestions for navigating these sensitive spaces.”
