“Long-term consistency trumps short-term intensity.” – Bruce Lee
Consistency is essential for building a thriving workplace culture and effective leadership. Leaders who demonstrate consistent behavior significantly boost employee morale and productivity. Here are some insights on how consistency can enhance your leadership:
1. Building Trust: Consistent actions build trust, bridging the gap between leaders and their teams. A Harvard Business Review study found that 58% of employees trust strangers more than their own bosses. This trust can be built through predictable and dependable actions by leaders.
2. Enhancing Skills and Competence: Regular effort leads to skill mastery and competence. Malcolm Gladwell's “10,000-hour rule” emphasizes that consistent practice over time is key to becoming proficient in any field.
3. Strengthening Relationships: Consistent one-on-one meetings with managers make employees three times more likely to be engaged at work (Gallup). These regular check-ins help in understanding concerns, providing timely feedback, and fostering a sense of belonging.
4. Boosting Confidence and Courage: Steady feedback and support from supervisors enhance self-efficacy and performance (Journal of Applied Psychology). As employees see the results of their regular efforts, they are more likely to take on challenging tasks and step out of their comfort zones.
The DJA Inclusive Manager’s Toolkit™ covers all these aspects, equipping managers with the tools to lead consistently and effectively.

Following the recent SHRM decision to adopt the acronym "I&D" instead of "IE&D," DeEtta Jones highlights the necessity of equity-focused strategies in our blog "Equity is Not Optional."
Equity centers those who want, deserve, and have been denied full access and resources needed to flourish in systems that were not built for them.
In a world where forced civility often silences true inclusion, it's time for genuine, transformative change.

Equity is Not Optional There’s no question what’s happening. Even as a person who has tried for many years to “be the change I want to see in the world,” it’s incredibly clear where we are: broken. We need new systems, new leadership, and new ways of creating what we want for ourselves and our world.

What we are experiencing now, in our workplaces and the world more broadly, calls for comfort, stamina, and understanding. Now is the moment for small, important, strategic acts.
We invite you to read our founder, DeEtta Jones's latest blog: "Joy is Our Birthright"
Joy is Our Birthright: Reflections on Community in the Time of Conflict Series I am a student of culture. Headlines, sound bytes, moments in time are important and interesting. But culture needs a wider lens. Culture happens in real-time but is only understood over time.
As we reflect on the tremendous energy, knowledge, support, and love of our inspiring community, words cannot fully express our gratitude.
On Tuesday, we concluded the third and final Community in the Time of Conflict session, focusing on "Reflecting on Technique and Sharing Learning". Our time together began by asking what each of us considers to be “the work” at this moment. The insights shared can stand as guideposts as we continue through complexity and conflict, ideas like modeling what it looks like to be an ally, creating space for others who may not have the opportunity, power, or confidence to contribute, or just showing up. Grounding ourselves in some of the potential responsibilities of the times helped set the foundation for our discussion about navigating our specific roles, capacities, and best practices.
To provide a new lens for the group to conceptualize the different roles they may play in various contexts, we walked through the Anti-Oppression Leadership Roles model DeEtta created. Community members used the model as a base to envision the many hats or roles they wear as they navigate their own situations.
One of the most powerful aspects of this community is our ability and willingness to ENGAGE—with one another, with our own perspective, and with the things we collectively aspire to be. The slides of this post contain some of the amazing reflections from the opening activity, the breakout session, and the transfer of current best practices.
This leads us back to gratitude. The series provided us all with a generous and special community and with hope through some grim and uncertain times. Thank you for your commitment to the work and to the unity shared in this space. Please refer to the final 3 slides of this post for information about more ways to continue this growth, together.

A reminder that beginning May 15, we are hosting a free 3-session series: Community in the Time of Conflict, a Zoom-based community gathering space for our colleagues in higher education.
We hope you can join us. Our goal in these sessions is not to teach, debate, or solve anything that is happening in the world (we wish we could!). We just want to acknowledge and help facilitate engagement in real-time between colleagues at different institutions who are knee-deep in conflict, or at the other extreme, sometimes deafening silence.
The sessions will be facilitated, real-time community discussions among higher education colleagues to share experiences, emotions, and best practices. Our Community sessions are not being recorded. Join us on:
- May 15, 2024, 4:00 to 5:00 pm ET | Doing the Work While Managing your Own Emotions
- May 29, 2024, 4:00 to 5:00 pm ET | Personal Well-Being and Replenishment

❗To our Higher Education Colleagues: We would love to see you at the LAST session of our Community in the Time of Conflict series on June 11, 4:00 to 5:00 pm ET. In that session, we will focus on Reflecting on Technique and Sharing Learning.
We will also share a special FREE gift for those who have been part of this journey with us. We look forward to connecting with you.

Our community is incredibly special. If you were at our session yesterday, thank you. You filled our shared space with generosity and constructive engagement. Thank goodness! We need evidence that spaces like this are possible in our intense world, and we also need to know exactly where to find each other. Accomplished! ✅
If you weren’t able to be there, the second session of the Community in the Time of Conflict series focused on Well-Being and Replenishment. We began by inviting people to reflect on what well-being means to them. It is so important to begin with an aspirational anchor. What will it look like when it’s happening well? What does well-being feel like? Picturing the future state allows me to work toward something I want and recognize and appreciate it when I am experiencing it.
We then talked about cognitive dissonance. We wanted to talk directly about what, for some of us, is the toughest part of what is happening in the world and our workplaces—the seeming disconnect between what we value and the actions and decisions we are witnessing or participating in. DeEtta created this model to frame the discussion and discuss what we did!
Of course, we wanted to do more than discuss; at DJA, we love getting to action! So we identified what we could DO more of and ask others to do “in the service of” creating the kind of well-being we want in our lives, relationships, and workplaces. A summary of some of the brilliant ideas shared is captured in this post.
We also want to note something that DeEtta also pointed out during the session: the above list is not unique to the times we live in now. This list of “acts and asks” is EXACTLY the same list she has been seeing for 30 years. What humans want and need—what WE want and need—is more of what is inclusive, healthy, caring, and balanced ALL THE TIME. And the more we practice this, the more resilience we build to get us through the tough times.
Together, we are creating and contributing to something incredibly special. Let’s keep practicing more of what we want to see now.
We encourage you to join our last session on June 11, 4-5 ET. Link is on our bio.

❗To our Higher Education Colleagues: We are here.
In a time of great division, uncertainty, fear, and in many cases, deafening silence at work, we recognize the need for our colleagues in higher education to have a space for genuine human connection.
A space to exhale, together.
A space to look ahead, together.

On May 15, we were honored to welcome higher education colleagues into a community space for the first of three sessions under the umbrella Community in the Time of Conflict.
The space was structured and included our expert facilitators, but it was mostly about enabling connection among colleagues. DJA facilitators guided the group through emotional reflection, sharing of personal stories and strategies for “doing the work while managing their emotions,” and gave ideas for giving and receiving support from the community.
We are sharing some of the generosity of the space, because we believe that community may be something you are seeking.
When asked, “What brought you here?” we heard things like:
- “Wanting to share ideas with others about best ways to create spaces for connection.”
- “Check in with others on how they are managing during this challenging time.”
When asked, “What has been most helpful during this time?” we heard things like:
- “Share on-call responsibilities with my team so we can individually take the time to rest.”
- “Have weekly unstructured ‘coffee talks’ with my team to keep us connected."
While contributions were confidential, we think it’s really important to share the love and support that was present in this space. Thank you to those of you who are already doing the work and supporting each other. We witnessed firsthand the beautiful, generous, and hopeful energy exchanged through unity.
For those of you who are still looking for community, we are here. If you were not able to attend, please know that you are welcome at one of our upcoming sessions. We would be honored for you, and your positive energy, to join us.
Our next sessions of the Community in a Time of Conflict series are:
- Wednesday, May 29, 2024, 4-5 pm | Focus: Personal Well-Being and Replenishment
- Tuesday, June 11, 2024, 4-5 pm | Focus: Reflecting on Technique and Sharing Learning
We hope you will join us. Follow the link and feel free to invite your friends and colleagues to join us! https://hubs.la/Q02xN8Bn0
What would you do if you had a year to yourself to imagine and work toward something better? A whole year to visualize and create positivity rather than dwell on what has gone wrong?
Focusing on what we aspire to empowers us to make new things happen, bringing them into the world through our own vision and passion. This makes us grow, evolve, and get better at the things that already captivate our imagination.
