⚠️ Attention athletes ⚠️ This Labor Day Monday September 5th Classes only from 8am to 12 pm.
If strength is what you’re after, few exercises give you as much of it as the Deadlift. But getting the form correct is tricky, and without proper setup and pre-pull tension, you won’t get the benefits.
If you’re brand new to deadlifting, or you’re starting to get serious about your strength training, then it’s important to spend some time understanding what it’s like to pull the slack out of the bar.
Pulling the slack out of the bar is the relationship you create with your body, the floor, and the barbell to create tension before physically lifting weight. Essentially, it’s how we signal to our body that we’re getting ready to exert force and lift a heavy object.
If you develop no tension before lifting the bar and just grip it and rip it, the slack you didn’t take out will cause you to lose your hip drive and your back position and zap your potential force development and strength output. It could also lead to injury.
Another way to think of it is trying to squeeze oranges 🍊 in your armpits.
What packing the lats does is not only create tension, but it also helps protect the spine by preventing the shoulders from rolling forward and the back from rounding over. Look at the two pictures above.
Think of retracting your scapula as trying to squeeze a pencil ✏️ between your shoulder blades.
When teaching the deadlift, I always instruct my athletes to have one or two cues in mind that help them execute the movement more effectively.
A more effective deadlift means a stronger and safer pull.
The main deadlift cues are:
-Breathe & brace
-Pull your hips down
-Take the slack out of the barbell
-Flex your armpits
-Hands as hooks – arms as chains
-Shoulder blades over barbell
-Shins to barbell
-Push the floor away
-Hips through
-Lock the hips & knees together
