🇮🇱🇺🇲ICC TRIP SPOTLIGHT🇺🇲🇮🇱
Members of our Hillel flew this past weekend to Washington DC for the Israel Coalition on Campus National Leadership Summit '24! During their 3 days, they got to hear from important speakers such as Former Prime Minister of Israel, Naftali Bennet, Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem, Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, and got to see our fav singer, Matisyahu! We can't to have these members and more of you at Hillel in just less than a month!!
Wishing a very happy birthday to our favorite math major and IT handyman, our Jewish Life and Learning Chair, Jack! We wish you a year filled with fun and, of course, lots of math! Our Hillel wouldn't technologically work without you, we love you!
We want to wish a very happy birthday to our Executive Director, Rabbi Josh! He's extremely hard-working, always puts a smile on our faces even through hard times, and never fails to create a safe environment for our students! We love you and have a wonderful birthday! 🤍💙💛🥳🥳

Our condolences to the family of Dr. Lovell and the whole Marquette community. It was just weeks ago that Dr. Lovell joined Jewish students and Hillel at the first ever Marquette Shabbat, just one of many examples of his work to make Marquette a welcoming place for all students. May his memory be for a blessing.
Today was the last day of our trip, and it was very Tel Aviv day. We began with yoga on the beach led by one of Tel Aviv’s most popular yoga and pilates instructors. It was an early morning but a wonderful way to start the day. We then visited Hostages Square, where art installations and tents have been set up by and for the hostages’ families to keep the awareness of those in captivity at the front of everyone’s minds. Here you see one of the installations there of a model tunnel symbolizing the tunnels holding hostages today. We then had a long lunch break at the Carmel market followed by a Halas workshop led by Keren, who spent several weeks with us over the winter at Hillel Milwaukee! We then traveled to Jaffa to meet with Ihab, an Arab peace activist who together with his wife Ora started a school for Jewish and Palestinian children to learn in together. We did our final daily processing session in Jaffa overlooking the sea, and then enjoyed a night in Tel Aviv before a beach morning tomorrow and flying home!
This morning was our last in Jerusalem as we headed south to the Bedouin city of Rahat where we learned about Bedouin society and heard from some of the Bedouin community’s hero’s from October 7. We then traveled to Bersheva to have lunch at an Ethiopian restaurant and learn from Naphtali, an Ethiopian activist, about the Ethiopian Jewish community and their challenges and triumphs, all while enjoying an amazing meal. We then arrived in Tel Aviv, where we met on zoom with Noor, a Palestinian activist from Bethlehem who shares his critiques of the political situation in Israel and of the war in Gaza. And finally we met with Yadin, who told us the story of how he was wounded while fighting to defend Kibbutz Be’eri. It was a long, fascinating, and sometimes challenging day of learning. Tomorrow is our last full day in Israel, which we will spend getting to know Tel Aviv even better!
Shavua tov from Jerusalem! Catching up on a couple of days of activities from our Side-by-Side trip. On Thursday we started our day at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and museum, learning about the history of the holocaust and the way its memory shapes Israeli society today. Following a lot of heavy, intense learning, we blew off some steam by floating in the Dead Sea. Friday morning went right back to learning, as we toured Palestinian neighborhoods of East Jerusalem with Rami Nazzal, a Palestinian journalist, who showed us checkpoints and his view of the conflict both in Jerusalem and beyond. Afterward we took a walking tour of the Rehavia neighborhood of Jerusalem where we focused on women’s issues and learned about some pioneering women in Israeli history and the challenges facing Israeli women today. We also met with Khaled Abu Toameh, an Arab journalist, who shared his view of the conflict from is many decades of reporting. Lastly we joined together for Shabbat dinner and some processing and fun in the park. Today, on Shabbat, we toured the Old City of Jerusalem and took in some of the holy sites, including the Western Wall and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Tomorrow we are headed south to learn more about some other minority groups in Israel before we reach Tel Aviv for the last few days of our trip!
Today was a challenging and emotional day on our Side-by-Side trip. We began our day at the site of the Nova music festival massacre, where we met Rita, a survivor of the massacre, as well as Oren and some of the other heroes who helped save her. From there, we visited the city of Sderot, where we saw how playgrounds include decorative shelters to keep children safe, saw some of the many rockets and mortars fired at the city, and saw the remains of the police station which was occupied by Hamas terrorists on October 7 and subsequently destroyed. Finally we visited the community of Kibbutz Kfar Azza and met Hen, a resident of the kibbutz who was traveling abroad on October 7, but who showed us the destruction in her community and told us the stories of many of the 45 kibbutz members murdered in the attack, as well as the members who are still being held hostage by Hamas in Gaza. We shared a few tears and many hugs, and were able to bear witness and touch the remains of some of the terror and destruction of that horrible day.
Hello from Israel and our Side by Side trip! Our trip began with a bit of an extra adventure, as everyone but one person didn’t receive their luggage, but we have carried on! We began in Tiberias, where we did an overview of the situation with Neil Lazarus, and met with Eyal Dror who told us of his experience as the commander of Operation Good Neighbor, in which the IDF saved the lives of Syrian civilians wounded in the civil war there. We learned about the security situation on Israel’s northern border at the Alma Center and had a lovely meal at Yanuch, a Druze village in the north. Today we began our day at the Bahai Gardens in Haifa, and then learned about the settlements, security situation, and challenges of the West Bank with a visit to Alphei Manashe. We also visited the IDF Spokesperson’s offices where we heard about the media and information war being fought since October 7. Tonight we will head to Jerusalem, and tomorrow will be our first of two visits to the south to see some of the destruction and hear first-hand accounts of the October 7 attack.
