Remember. End the stigma. End AIDS

“This year’s theme for World AIDS Day is “World AIDS Day 35: Remember and Commit.” This annual event serves as a reminder of the global struggle to end HIV-related stigma, an opportunity to honor those we have lost, and a rallying cry to commit to working toward a day when HIV is no longer a public health threat.”

Exciting news!

We have outgrown our office space we have been using in the back house of The Courage House so we're moving! This will open additional space for new programming for us! We're looking for volunteers who are interested in volunteering to help get our new space ready (cleaning and light moving) for us to move in on the morning of Monday the 4th (starting at 9am), and helping us to move furniture into the space on Friday the 8th (starting at 10:00am).

We are also in search of a few items for the new space:
1. Large "boardroom" like table and chairs to seat 12
2. Large table to seat 6- 8
2. Refrigerator
3. A small "kitchen cart/island" with wheels

If you can lend a hand on either or both days or have items to donate, please reach out to Marissa at [email protected]. Thank you!

Courage MKE gives back to neighborhood families during holiday season 11/22/2023

Thank you TMJ4 News❤

Courage MKE gives back to neighborhood families during holiday season In the days leading up to Thanksgiving, the Courage MKE house is filled with holiday cheer from stockings hung with care to a living room tree all aglow.

WHOA!!! For the first time in almost five years, NO ONE fought bath time! 🤣🤣🤣

Last night our Resident Care Worker, KJ and one of our House Volunteers treated our residents to a sound bath.

A sound bath is a meditative experience where those in attendance are “bathed” in sound waves. These waves are produced by various sources, including healing instruments such as gongs, singing bowls, percussion, chimes, rattles, tuning forks, and even the human voice itself.

Sounds delightful doesn’t it?!?!

Family,

Since we opened The Courage House, it has been an important part of our program that the house does a community service project every quarter.

Today, we kick off our 4th Annual Holiday Helpers program to make sure the children around The Courage House have a great holiday. Last week, our residents and staff went door to door, delivering Holiday Wishes letters to 300 of our neighbors.

If you, your family/friends or office are looking for ways to help this holiday season, please consider adopting on of the families from the link below. We ask that all gifts are wrapped, labeled and dropped off to The Courage House by December 15th as our residents will be delivering to each family starting Tuesday, December 19th.

A special thank you to our friends at Target - Grafton for helping grant some of the wishes already.

He’s back for his third year in a row and we wouldn’t have it any other way! Please welcome our emcee for our gala Montell Ross!

Montell has been part of the Courage family since we started! He’s been Mr. Courage MKE, a sounding board to all of us, and now, with his most important role, he serves as a Courage MKE Board Member.

If you know, you know, but this man lights the house up for us the night of our gala and we are so grateful for his talent of hosting our biggest fundraiser of the year!

We love you Montell!!

10/27/2023

Always has and always will take all of us working together!!!

10/25/2023

We’re down to the final count down! Only 9 more days until we’re all together! It takes so much to ensure that the generosity from the community the night of our gala goes toward our programmming and youth we serve. Today, we’d like to express our heartfelt gratitude to this year’s gala Presenting Sponsor Riverside Family Dental!

Dr. Blanchard and his team are no strangers to our Courage MKE family. The team at Riverside Family Dental have been providing free dental care for our Residents and has been so generous supporting our staff as well.

Dental care for youth in the social welfare system is very sparse and quite frankly, not that good if existent at all. We are so grateful to Dr. B for ensuring our small Courage Family’s dental health is the best it possibly can be!

See you all at Ohana!! 🌺

10/20/2023

ONLY TWO WEEKS TO GO UNTIL OUR ANNUAL GALA! We could not be more excited to welcome our keynote speaker and guest of honor Brandon Wolf! Brandon is a talented writer, activist, and a Pulse Nightclub survivor. His powerful writing had us laughing, crying, and shaking with rage! Brandon's story, like so many, will forever stay imprinted in our hearts, pushing us onward to create and honor safe spaces for q***r youth. ***rkidsneedyou

10/17/2023

We are just over two weeks away from our annual gala; Ohana!! The excitement is building and we cannot wait so see all of you on our favorite night of the year!

Our gala team has poured their hearts into this night and we are so grateful. Kristen, Corinn, and Lisa thank you for volunteering to step up and plan this year’s event for us! We know how much work goes into this and cannot wait to see it all come together.

We will begin to send “Gala need to knows” later next week!!

Our Story

Courage MKE became an idea of Co-Founders, Brad and Nick Schlaikowski while they were foster parents. Together they welcomed multiple homeless LGBTQ+ youth into their home after learning about their stories of rejection, fear and survival. Their first foster daughter told stories of being kicked out of her home because she came out as Le***an and then rejected further from women’s shelters because of who he is. Another one of their foster daughters fought to survive and was manipulated into s*x trafficking.

In late summer of 2015, Brad and Nick knew it was time to take action and bring homelessness amongst our LGBTQ+ youth to the front of the conversation. That year they, along with a group of amazing friends put together a community event called “Courage; an event for homeless lgbtq+ youth” to help raise awareness to the cause as well as over $15,000.00 for another local nonprofit. The event came and gone and though proud, Brad and Nick still wanted to do more. They brought their friends together and proposed the idea of continuing to raise awareness and eventually open a facility that any child that identified as LGBTQ+ would be accepted for who they are, taught what it means to be part of a family and most importantly a place they would be proud to call him, it was that moment that Courage MKE began.

Brad and Nick quickly created a Board of Directors and by January 2016, because of the high needs of this community and the generous support the event received and continues to receive, Courage MKE was established as a nonprofit organization!
