Yesterday, the Back-To-School Bus Tour stopped in Milwaukee to hear about community schools. United Way hosted a roundtable discussion on chronic absenteeism with the U.S. Department of Education, Secretary Miguel Cardona, Neera Tanden, Director of the Domestic Policy Council, Dr. Mandy Cohen, Director of the Centers for Disease Control, and Representative Gwen Moore. This stop in Milwaukee is part of a larger bus tour highlighting public education. Roundtable topics included the connection between mental health and attendance, homelessness prevention and case management as a strategy to stabilize youth in their school of origin and increase attendance, and how the community school model works to identify root causes of absenteeism and mitigate those through school-community partnerships. United Way CEO & President Amy Lindner joined community school agency representatives James Wilbern from Silver Spring Neighborhood Center, Maudwella Kirkendoll of Community Advocates, Dr. Julie Schuller from Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers, and Rosa Cerda, Principal of MPS H.W. Longfellow School.
