Washburn Graduate Robert D. Cabana (’67) said his experiences
at Washburn High School were important to his success. Recently
retired from his role as a senior administrator at NASA overseeing
more than 18,000 employees and a $25-billion-dollar budget, Robert shared with us the ways his time at Washburn prepared him for life.
“What I remember most was the camaraderie of my friends on the stage crew under the direction of Mr. Krause, the Shakespeare that I can still recite that I had to memorize in Ms. Walsh's 11th grade English class, and the math I learned as a senior in Mr. Sverdrup's advanced math class. I learned teamwork on the stage crew and a love of tech and fixing things. Our production of "Bye Bye Birdie" our senior year was awesome. The memorization skills I
developed under Ms. Walsh aided me at the Academy and memorizing emergency procedures flying jets and space shuttles, not to mention rounding me out with a love of literature.
What I learned under Mr. Sverdrup led me to be a math major with a love of applied math in engineering. Finally, on the wrestling team I learned persistence (and not giving up.) Donate today! https://interland3.donorperfect.net/weblink/WebLink.aspx?name=E354416&id=8

This event honors John Sylvester and Hallie Brown. John was a captain and an all-state soccer player at Washburn who went on to play for the Minnesota Thunder and coached soccer at Washburn and Minneapolis United. John was an inspiration to a generation of soccer players in Minneapolis including Hallie who played for Southwest and died of Osteosarcoma around the same time that John lost his long, courageous battle with ALS.
Spring brings Prom. Can anyone guess what year these fine-looking Millers are from? Answer on Friday.
Dr. Charles Standing - WHS Class of ‘61
Donors make a difference! Dr. Charles Standing was captain of Washburn's ski team in 1960-61, lead actor in the Senior Class Play, lifelong advocate of the highest quality for public education and a legacy donor to the Washburn Foundation. In 2018, he made a generous donation to the Washburn High School Foundation’s permanent endowment fund, allowing us to perpetuate support for students in the years ahead.
From his obituary: Chuck always viewed his education at Washburn as the foundation that carried him through his studies at the U of MN where he completed his PhD work in Bio-Chemical Engineering in 1970. But it was his teachers at Washburn, notably in physics, chemistry, and mathematics that inspired Chuck to become how his colleagues described him as a "man of science" across a broad spectrum of disciplines.
Chuck carried out much of his professional career as a food scientist in Minneapolis, first with Pillsbury, and later with General Mills, where he headed the technical research division for many years. He was granted numerous patents for new food products and processing innovations.
Consider an estate gift to the Washburn High School Foundation to support Washburn High School now and in the future.

“The goal is to reach out to more students that may not currently feel connected to school activities. We provide a space for a wide variety of students, some of which don’t see themselves fitting into sports or other more academic clubs. In these cases, we hope to build community and connect students with other like-minded people while fostering
successful social skills.” Derek Olson, Math

We are in extraordinary times. Educating and learning through a pandemic is really uncharted territory. What we know is that the impact of COVID-19 has greatly affected the Class of 2020. So many milestones and rites of passages have been affected. We’re all heartbroken about it. But Millers rally; it’s what we do and who we are. We are Miller Strong!
The Foundation has organized a fundraiser for the seniors. Please give a gift of any amount to support the WHS Class of 2020 and help us reach our goal of $10,000!
Your donation will help fund an alternative graduation celebration or gift (depending on what is allowed), discounted yearbooks, emergency relief for individual students and families, financial support for college bound students, and other needs that arise for our seniors during this crisis.
