Spring Cleaning Find: Book Edits
In case you’re curious how much work goes into writing a DIY book about ice lanterns, this is just one page of edits at one point in time. I liken it to giving birth—a lot of time and effort to get handed a beautiful bundle . . . and then you are so happy you forget how much work it took getting there. Haha
My beautiful book, Ice Luminary Magic, was born in the Fall of 2018. The proud papa, Tom Hedberg, was there at the inception and held my hand through the entire process. The midwife (editor) was our dear friend Kate Stanley with extra help by Kat Hetland Shea, Ellen Van Iwaarden, Dave Schaenzer, Susan Lenfestey, Mary Arneson, Dale Hammerschmidt and Peter Hedberg. They all steered and cheered me along. What a ride!

New ice imprinting technique (inspired by ice wrangler) using a silicone trivet and food coloring. Remove trivet, syringe food colored water in imprint, then refreeze. It started out green for St Pat’s day but faded in the freezer. Color enhanced to show design.

sent: Large (20+”) ice medallion using plastic wreath storage box as form. Made using cookie cutters and food coloring.

During this pocket of cold weather in this Winter-that-wasn’t, Tom and I had a somber family event to manage with people coming from near and far. So, I thought I’d put a bucket of water out to freeze and attempt a nature-made ice lantern and light it up for our guests. Silly me - while juggling details, I promptly forgot about it and it froze solid. I found it last night after spending all day laughing and crying with family. Stubbornly, I brought it inside and drilled it out - first with a drill bit and then with hot water which caused it to thermal shock in a delightful fashion. After I was done, I looked at its imperfect beauty and wondered when to display it. A quick peek at my text messages told me that it should be now. A friend had sent up an emotional flare for support and lighting an ice lantern for them just made sense. I woke up this morning and it was still burning bright.. So, dear friend, we are thinking of you and the strength you will need to make it over this hurdle. Peace to you and all who are struggling.

If you've never tried making your own ice lantern, this is a great chance for you to learn some basic techniques - and pick up some tips and tricks from the Ice Wrangler herself! :)

The much-too-brown Enchanted Forest for the Luminary Loppet just received a gift!
A big thank you goes to the Minnesota Ice Castles and its manager Jake! When Jake learned he would be forced to close the Minnesota Ice Castle for the season because of unusually warm temperatures, he asked Ice Castles corporate if he could donated unused sculptural ice blocks to the Enchanted Forest of the Luminary Loppet. Yeah! Jonah (a Loppet Foundationcrew member) agreed to go pick it up - all 3,600 lbs of it!
Now, that all that beautiful ice is in the Enchanted Forest, our plan is to cut up the huge blocks of ice into easier-to-move pieces that can be used to QUICKLY create interesting ice luminaries! You see, most of the ice made by our Enchanted Forest Wintercraft Team had melted, and without cold temps to make more we are struggling to create an “enchanted forest” ice luminary experience for the Luminary Loppet guests. This new infusion of beautiful ice will be a game changer. Now, I just wish I owned a larger chainsaw! It’s going to be slow going with my little ice sculpting beauty, but she’ll get the job done.

Our first introductory ice lantern workshop in early January was such a hit, we're doing it again! Join us in our southwest Minneapolis "Ice Lab" this Friday Jan 26th from 5:30-8pm for our "Let's Get Started" class!

It's a hands-on workshop where you'll learn basic techniques, as well as design elements, textures, and lighting effects. You'll also leave class with a copy of our Ice Luminary Magic book (or $30 worth of Wintercraft products).
