Nice to see an ASPPH shout-out to SPH Prof. Gary Schwitzer and his HealthNewsReview.org site, which uses volunteer experts (including our own Prof. Susan Wei) to rate popular press articles and private press releases on a set of criteria, most notably whether the article adequately discusses cost, benefits, harms, evidence quality, and alternative options.
It is virtually unique among media watchdog sites in its focus on health issues. And if there was ever a time we needed fact-checkers, it's now.

Another giant of statistics gone: RIP Steve Fienberg, former head of the Theoretical Statistics dept here at Minnesota, who lost his long battle with cancer this morning.
Stephen E. Fienberg, 1942-2016-CMU News - Carnegie Mellon University Stephen E. Fienberg, University Professor of Statistics and Social Science at Carnegie Mellon University, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, in Pittsburgh. He was 74.
RIP Charles Stein - his discovery of the benefits of shrinkage estimation led to the revival of interest of Bayesian methods in the 1950s, then to empirical Bayes, & eventually to now-routine Bayes-MCMC methods for hierarchical modeling.
He was also a fierce anti war protester throughout his life; Stanford students sometimes saw him picking up trash outside their classroom windows, the local judge's sentence for his civil disobedience.
