First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis
First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis is a congregational humanist community dedicated to promoting a free search for truth, meaning, and justice.
A heritage of forward-thinking humanism at home in the here and now.
The wheel of the year turns, and brings us again to the threshold of the harvest time. Lammas is one milepost in the cycle of the seasons, which embraces both constant change as well as predictable rhythms. Are we open to the beauty that the unfolding of evolution can bring? Music from the FUS house band, The Eclectics, and special guest Allan Steinhauer.
Save the date! The annual fundraising walk for Minnesota’s chapter of NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness) is happening on Saturday, Sept. 28. What a great day for Humanists to gather outdoors and support “Mental Health for All.” Join our team here: https://www.namiwalks.org/team/Humanist_Hearts_Healthy_Minds
Join Rev. Je and FUS member Dara Strickland at Assembly for a kitchen table discussion about how the rituals of hospitality transform the utilitarian into the affirmingly humanist. We will be updating the Society on the evolving work at the Second Sunday meal at Plymouth Congregational Church and exploring additional ways FUS members can connect to the neighbors we host for dinner there. Music will be provided by specials guests, Line Dry, a group consisting of singer and pianist Michelle Hernick, and guitarist Kelly Jantz.
We live in a time when the everyday stresses of work, school, and maintaining relationships have been compounded by climate change, political and social upheaval, and a global pandemic. Knowing that it’s not so easy to simply “reduce your stress,” what can we do to take care of ourselves that falls outside the typical “diet and exercise” box? Join the Mental Health Team for some fresh ideas about taking care of your mental health. Rev. Dr. Jé will also be on hand to lead an activity aimed at helping people creatively express their ideas about wellness and self-care through Haiku. Music provided by our very own Heather Martens and Dave Morse, accompanied by their daughter, Julia Morse.
Here is a statement from Rev. Exodus Hooper about the attempted assasination of former President Donald Trump. Please go to the link in the bio to read their full statement.
As a congregation we have 8 Principles that help to guide our congregation. Our 2nd is Justice, equity and compassion in human relationships.
This series of stories by member Mikki Morrissette is about mental health, house repair, vulnerability, talking to strangers, collaboration, and how blues music might be the key to the universe. She will be sharing recent lessons she has learned from people featured in the Minnesota Women's Press magazine she edits, as well as a musician and a carpenter. Special musical guests: members of the rising Burning Blue Rain blues band.

Today at the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis [ ] we (Dr. Rev. David Breeden , myself and our congregational family) released Rev. Kelli Clement [ ] into her new frontier of ministry in Iowa. I had a wonderful opportunity to offer the tradition of feet washing as a symbolic way to close her chapter at FUS. She has been a keeper of the flame in our congregational community -- a living chalice -- lighting the way forward justice, calling us to worship as an act of human-worthiness, breaking us into healthy and nourishing ground, and warming our heart with love that is beyond belief.
"We extinguish this flame
but not the light [her] truth,
The warmth of community,
Or the fire of [her] commitment.
These we carry in our hearts until we are together again"
Auntie Kelli thank you for being a Chalice for me! Keep the clothes unfolded and know your work is finished. Go forth -- there is fire next time
How does renewal help us navigate transition? Rev. Kelli looks backward over her past nine years at FUS and forward to your next chapter. Also, child dedication! Special music will be provided by Rev. Kelli Clement, Mike Vasich and Paul Riedesel.
Early Bird Ticket Prices for our Summer Solstice Celebration are good through Sunday, June 16th. Get your tickets soon! FAMILIES, did you see that kids in 8th grade and under are FREE? To purchase tickets online, go to: https://fusmpls.square.site
Rev. Dr. Jé Exodus Hooper, gave a vital talk on Sunday challenging our congregation to think deeply about the structure and culture of our organization. They challenged us to investigate how we welcome (or fail to welcome) new folks who offer differing philosophies and visions for what it means to be in congregation. You can watch their full talk here https://youtu.be/heFR7A2nipU
Times are greatly changing and congregational practice is declining as generations are evolving. What is the church called to do? What is the mission and focus of this social and spiritual beacon? Together we will unpack some congregational considerations to engage transformation that may enhance the life force of our communities, and helps us build toward a better future. With music from the FUS Chalice Choir
Join us at FUS for food, fun, and festivities! Check out the latest Seasonal Celebrations Blog for more information about the event and how to purchase tickets!

The old melting pot metaphor for the US still has some “resistance is futile” power to it. We all must, however, resist. Our Music Director, Mike Vasich, will be sharing selection from one of the jazz piano greats, Fats Waller, in honor of his birthday on May 21.
CASTING WORKSHOP: Sunday, June 2 @ noon, FUS Dietrich Room. Join us if you are interested in being a mummer or quarter reader! Our Summer Solstice Celebration will be on Friday, June 21 @ 6:30pm. Rehearsals will be on Sunday, June 9 @ noon plus one more TBD.
