Join the School of Physics and Astronomy for "Towards Artificial Life with DNA Nanotechnology," presented by Paul Chaikin (Silver Professor, New York University). Self-replication and evolution under selective pressure are inherent phenomena in life, but few artificial systems exhibit these phenomena. Professor Chaikin's research group designed a process and a system of DNA origami tiles that exponentially replicate a seed pattern, doubling (or more) the copies in each diurnal-like cycle of temperature and UV illumination, producing more than 7 million copies in 24 cycles. They demonstrate environmental selection in growing populations by incorporating pH sensitive binding in two sub-populations and also use DNA origami to self-assemble complex arrangements of microspheres and emulsion droplets.

In thousands of atlases depicting the working objects of inquiry—from bodies, clouds, plants, to crystals and insects—physicians and natural philosophers worked out what counted as scientific objectivity. This long-term history, with its various takes on what a reliable scientific image should be, converged in the years-long struggle of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) to produce a picture of a black hole robust enough to make public. On April 10, 2019, the team released the first image leased of a black hole, an image viewed within a very few days by more than a billion people. This talk is about how the EHT team of some 200 scientists came to judge the glowing, crescent-like ring as objective.

Join the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences and the School of Physics and Astronomy for "The NASA Psyche Mission: Journey to a Metal World" with Dr. Lindy Elkins-Tanton.
The NASA Psyche Mission is a journey to a metal asteroid orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter. What makes the asteroid Psyche unique is that it appears to be the exposed nickel-iron core of an early planet, one of the building blocks of our solar system. The spacecraft will launch in August 2022 and rendezvous with asteroid Psyche in 2026.
Elkins-Tanton is the Pysche Mission Principal Investigator and one of the world’s foremost authorities on asteroids. She will discuss what we know about Psyche, the many things we do not know, and the importance of asteroids to understanding the origins of planets.
