While many of the claims by voting rights activists were dismissed, the fact that the lawsuit continues under Section 208 of the Voting Rights Act is a reminder that our fight is far from over. We will persist in protecting the voting rights of disabled Alabamians and use this momentum to push for broader protections for all voters. The winding road to voting rights continues in Alabama.

Next up in our Board Member Spotlight series is Shalela Dowdy ✨
Shalela is a native of Mobile, Alabama. In 2008 she graduated from Murphy High School and later went on to earn a B.S. in American Legal Studies (Pre Law) from the United States Military Academy at West Point (2012), and a M.A. in Leadership Studies from the University of Texas at El Paso (2017). Shalela is a current law student at Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
In addition to her impressive academic history, Shalela served 6 years in the United States Army on active duty as an Air Defense Artillery Officer and Human Resource Officer. She is currently in the Army Reserves where she holds the rank of Major and the position of Military Academy Liaison Officer.
In addition to being the founding president of Stand Up Mobile, Shalela is a member of Urban League Young Professionals, Kappa Epsilon Psi Military Sorority, a Silver Life Member of the NAACP, the 2nd Vice President of the Mobile Branch of the NAACP, a Legacy Life Member of NCNW (National Council of Negro Women), and a member of Delta Sigma Theta.
