Breath is key. If you are just starting out with a relaxation practice try inhaling slowly for a count of 4 (through the nose). Hold for a count of 4. Exhale slowly for a count of 4. Hold for a count of 4. Tip: if you want to intensify the relaxation response hold after exhale for a longer count. 💨

This a tool that I use with my clients to help them manage the build up of stress in the body throughout the day. I ask them to use this exercise each time they notice their bodies respond to stress. That may mean doing this many time s a day🤪. The sequence is key 🔑

Grounding: 🦶🌱to feel SAFE in the present moment. If you can’t get outside and put your feet in the grass just notice the weight of your feet as they press into the floor. Notice how the ground or seat beneath you is holding you up. You are rooted here in the safety of this present moment.

Breathing: 💨Now that you are grounded and safe in the present use your breath for BALANCE and CENTERING. Take a few deep breaths here. Imagine that as you take a slow exhale the stress releases with the breath. On the inhale focus on your center.

Fluid: 💧Now that you are grounded/safe in the present and also balanced and centered try to produce saliva in your mouth to turn on the digestive system (Which actually inhibits the sympathetic/fight or flight and increases relaxation). This may sound weird but try to produce saliva in your mouth to feel CALM and CONTROLLED. Try it out.

After trying these three for a period of time and you feel comfortable, bring in the imagination 🤔🔥Now that you are grounded/safe, balanced/centered, calm/controlled pull into mind an image of a calm place. A place that you associate with feeling of calm or safety.
Savor that for a few.

This tool ,developed by Elan Shapiro, is called Earth, Air, Water, and Fire. It is an awesome tool to help with regulation throughout our day when dealing with stress, anxiety, and especially in the early stages of trauma recovery.

What tools do you use to help you manage stress throughout your day?

Sing this tune 🎶 Do Be Do Be Do Be Do 🎶 Finding balance is 🔑 in regulating your nervous system. I don’t remember which teacher along the way to thank for this useful (maybe a little corny) tool, but it stuck. This tune has served as a quick and easy reminder that when my life has too much doing and not enough being, something will give…and not always according to my plan.

Ever feel like all of life's stressful experiences are just piling up? Feeling the effects of adverse experiences can feel like a game of Jenga sometimes. We don't have to experience or be exposed to a major life threatening event to feel the effects of trauma.

Repeated stressful events can compound and activate our nervous system.. setting off a stress/threat response. Examples of low intensity activators could look like:✨Chaotic environments✨ Aggressive environments✨ Punitive Environments ✨Inconsistent child rearing practices✨Instability at home (financially, emotionally, residentially, etc.).

It is the nervous system's response to an event/experience that can result in traumatic stress symptoms.. not the event itself. So basically, it's the arousal in the body that activates the stress response.

Happy Memorial Day!🇺🇸

05/28/2022

As you go into the weekend, I invite you to get curious about your system. Is there a place you go to for feelings of calm or peace? Are you alone or with family/friends? What can you see 👀, hear👂 , or feel 🤚? Just take some time to notice if there is a shift in your nervous system state? Having a calm place can help us anchor in a safe state where we are able to experience joy, curiosity, restoration, feel open to connection and move toward regulating our system. Just get curious. Happy Weekend!

05/27/2022

Breaking patterns begins with getting curious and noticing our system's response to everyday (ordinary and extraordinary) life circumstances.

Once we learn to regulate we can better see how our bodies send the brain messages that create our stories and patterns. Take a few moments today to check in with your body and just notice. We 🤍

Hi, I'm Emily. My approach to therapy is one that meets you where you are, where we collaborate from a place of curiosity, explore your individual needs, and work together to formulate a plan that best fits you.

I work through a polyvagal theory and attachment lens. I may invite you, within your level of comfort, to get to know your nervous system and learn how it aids in creating our stories (of ourselves and the world around us). This sets the tone for safety and connection and smooths the path for introduction to additional therapeutic modalities, such as EMDR, if appropriate.

When working with couples I utilize an Emotionally Focused Therapy approach as we focus on identifying the negative patterns in the relationship, learn to communicate needs, and create a new pattern of relating.

I invite you to sit down with me, ask questions, and just get a felt sense for whether we might be a good fit. The level of connection and the likelihood of positive therapeutic outcomes relies heavily on your level of comfort. Let's connect @ www.newchapterspace.com.

You can also find me Emily Ryan, LICSWwhere I promote mental health awareness and wellness.

Why the imperfect wall? In choosing the image and design for our website I was drawn to the imperfections in the background, the cracks in the wall, and the new growth shooting to light. We all have imperfections, wounds, scars, mistakes we have made…we all have stuff. Cracks, symbolizing those times when something must give, we can’t hold it all together, and/or we feel as though we might just break.

Whatever that looks like for you, I see a Breaking Through. Like the new growth, a breaking open from old patterns of reacting or maybe striving that does not serve anymore. Old stories that we learned along the way, stories our brain made up to make sense of the world and help us survive, and stories that have been reinforced over time. A breaking open to a new chapter where there is the possibility for growth or space for acceptance to just be you... YOUR NEW CHAPTER.
