The Shire Arts Collective

We exist to support local artists.

At the Shire Arts Collective, our mission is to make inclusive, engaging and accessible events, spaces and platforms for all artists and participants to freely express themselves. Formerly the Shire Community Space, the organization was created to bring together folks from Modesto and surrounding areas and inspire creativity, community, consciousness, skill-share and fun! We host classes and works

ARTIST OF THE MONTH FOR JANUARY:
Zoe Toscano

Zoe is a figurative artist, painting the human form allows her to contemplate the complexities of human relationships through a visual language. At this time her work is centralized around the female experience. She strives to reclaim the female gaze through depicting women in moments of both strength and vulnerability. Another key component of her work is the complicated relationship between human and nature, exploring our differences, similarities and humans ability to separate ourselves from nature.

“I’ve been creating art for as long as I can remember. My parents were and continue to be extremely supportive. At a young age they encouraged me to express myself creatively. My mom, having a science background, instilled in me an appreciation for nature and love of exploration. My dad exposed my sister and I to art galleries and museums, cementing a love and understanding of art for its cultural and historical significance. I am very fortunate to have always had space for being creative and a strong support system.”

“I was born and raised in Modesto. Modesto has a wealth of creative people. There is something very special about growing up in this community. Being so familiar with the area, you are acute to understanding what this town has to offer and what your community needs. I think it is important as an artist to withhold social responsibility and to engage with your community. Modesto is by no means perfect but being centrally located in the most geographically diverse state in the United States is an absolute dream. I feel as though vibrant large cities, beautiful coastal lines, enchanting forest mountains, desserts and world famous national parks are at my fingertips.”

One of her biggest milestones is running an all female run gallery in her hometown. It was transformative to her artistic career to be given the opportunity to carve a space to create free from judgment. She says managing a gallery gave her insight in understanding relationships between galleries and artists. This experience allowed her to push herself to develop her skills and create her language as an artist.

“One of my dearest memories from running Tri-Chromatic Gallery is sharing an experience with a young transgender artist who gleefully informed my partners and I that they sold their very first piece of work in our space. It was an honor to play a role in the development of an artist who may struggle identifying with a marginalized group. I strive to use my platform to uplift artists in my community.”

ARTIST OF THE MONTH

Our Artist of the Month for December is D'Angel Barnhart of Oakdale, CA.

D'Angel Barnhart’s artistic inspiration comes from life experiences and from the stories people share in various mediums. Her biggest milestone is having a little more courage than fear and to share her art expressions.

“It took a good amount of time to get to this point but I am glad to be here.”

D’Angel has a handful of projects developing right now, though the two I want to highlight are the Community Art project that shows duality and a larger sculpture as an ode to the Divine Feminine.

For the Community Art project, she has two prompted questions that are opposite. She will preserve the uniqueness of the people's handwritten responses to make a digital graphic. She is thinking of approaching a local city government to propose this as a mural so we can understand the community a little more.
As for the Divine Feminine piece, it is a gratitude project for the divine feminine energy in her life, in particular towards her mother and grandmother. She is using clay, foil, paint, and materials you can find outside like feathers, leaves, branches, etc. We are excited to see how that comes out!

If you are interested in participating in the Community Art project, direct message your handwritten response.

You can follow D’Angels journey on Instagram ❤️
