CalPride community!! We are looking for TGI creatives, makers, and food vendors who are interested in selling their goods at our August TGI Pride event on August 24 at the Centre Plaza in Modesto. We will not be charging application or vendor fees- it’s a chance for US to support YOU! Email jessica@calpride@org if you’re interested 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈✨
Happy Tuesday, everyone! 🏳️🌈🩷 We found that it would be valuable to discuss CalPride’s use of the words “queer” and “LGBTQ+” in our messaging. We use these words pretty interchangeably to encompass the broad, complex, and often intersecting identities of our community.
Some of our community will self-identify as “queer”, a word originally used as a slur against LGBT+ folks starting in the 19th century. Since the 1980s, some people in the community have reclaimed the word to describe themselves. This has resulted in the “Q” in LGBTQ+. Swipe for a brief introduction as to why some call themselves “queer”. 🖤🤍🖤🤍
We understand that some people, especially our elders, may still find the word “queer” offensive and choose not to use it in any context. We hear you. It is our goal at CalPride to connect with you and use the words you describe yourself as. Connection starts with communication. Want to share your experience with self-identification and description? Let us know what you think in the comments! 🏳️⚧️✨
July 21st is Zero HIV Stigma Day. Today represents our commitment to educating our communities about HIV, amplifying the voices of those affected by it, and taking action against HIV stigma. HIV stigma is caused by a number of factors, including miseducation, homophobia, xenophobia, racism, and prejudice against people who use substances. At CalPride, we stand against HIV stigma prevalent in communities and systems.
It’s always important to know your status. Make an appointment with CalPride’s Health Equity Department for a free HIV test and health screening.
With love, CalPride 🩷🏳️🌈
