Surry Arts Council TAPS
FREE guitar, banjo and fiddle lessons! FREE fiddle, guitar, and banjo lessons take place EVERY Thursday at the Historic Earle Theatre.
The Surry Arts Council Traditional Arts Programs for Students (TAPS) is a North Carolina Arts Council funded program that seeks to preserve North Carolina's musical heritage and traditions. Fiddle lessons at 5:30 p.m. and Guitar/Banjo lessons at 6:15 p.m. Parents and guardians are encouraged to stay during lessons. TAPS unites elementary and middle school students with local traditional musicians

The workshops are hosted by the Surry Arts Council and Veterans Memorial Park, Inc. and made possible through support from our Presenting Sponsor, The NC Department of Natural & Cultural Resources as part of their Come Hear North Carolina program, and additional funding from the Grassroots Grant Program of the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

The Surry Arts Council’s TAPS students were invited to perform at in Raleigh, NC on May 22, 2024 outside the North Carolina Legislative Building.
Hosted by Arts North Carolina, ARTS Day gathers artists and arts leaders from across the state coming together to learn, network, and celebrate the transformational power of the arts.
🌟SAC 2024 Scholarships Now Open🌟
The Surry Arts Council is accepting 2024 Scholarship applications!
Scholarships are available for college-bound students, current college students, and artists pursuing a degree or continuing education in music, drama, dance, television, film, communications, visual arts, commercial art, arts administration, or other arts-related fields.
⭐️Recipients must be Surry County residents.
⭐️Completed applications to SAC by Friday, May 3 at 5 pm.

Funds for the Surry Arts Council Scholarship program come from the Kester Sink Birthday Endowment Fund, the Mildred Wolfe Robertson Scholarship Fund, the Sandy Beam Scholarship Fund, the Betty Lynn Scholarship Endowment, and the Jimmy Lowry Scholarship Endowment.

This yearly event celebrates the music and teachings of Surry County native and old-time music pioneer and icon, Tommy Jarrell who lived from March 1, 1901 to January 28, 1985.
It’s a festival that has something for every old-time music lover.
🎻Friday, February 25th at 7 pm - FREE screening of “You Gave Me A Song,” a film about Alice Gerrard.
Q&A session with Director Kenny Dalsheimer and Alice Gerrard will follow the film. A short performance by Alice Gerrard accompanied by Tatiana Hargreaves and Reed Stutz will follow.
🪕Saturday, February 26th at 11 am - WPAQ Merry-Go-Round starts with workshop instructors and participants followed by bands including Grace ‘N Grass
🎻Saturday, February 26th from 1:30-5:00 pm - Old-Time workshops presented by Chester McMillian, Martha Spencer, and Emily Spencer

Old-Time workshops will take place at the Historic Earle Theatre and will include fiddle, banjo, guitar, bass, singing, and dancing – whatever participants want to learn.
