20 Ways to Calm and Ground
1. Pet your dog and/or cat.
2. Take a walk or hike.
3. Listen to your favorite song.
4. Splash cool water on your face.
5. Put lotion on your hands.
6. Do 15 Starjacks and then lay on your back in a star shape for 5 minutes.
7. Breathe into your belly for a count of 4, hold for 4 and breath out slowly for 6- repeat 10 times.
8. Call a friend and share.
9. Wrap up in a cozy blanket.
10. Sit in a rocking chair or swing.
11. Gardening.
12. Take a shower or bath use a scented sugar or salt scrub.
13. Cut out pictures of scents, food, places and comforts and decide to purchase one item like an essential oil or pillow to create a calm space in your home.
14. Turn on happy music and dance.
15 Write a poem, draw or journal.
16. Drink ice water, hot tea or a favorite beverage like lemonade or chocolate, almond milk.
17. Have a snack like an orange, a ginger cookie or a small piece of chocolate.
18. Go swimming, walk on the beach or jump rope.
19. Brush your hair gently or brush your teeth with mint or cinnamon tooth paste.
20. Put your hand on your wrist or heart. Remind yourself that you are love and light and feel the energy pulse in your body.
If you want your relationship to be more loving, listen to your partner and respond with emotional kindness = Empathy.
Take turns supporting one another.
Share - What you are feeling that’s about you (not blame).
Ask - for what you need (nobody can read your mind).
Realize - that your partner may or may not be in a position to meet your needs, negotiate when that’s needed.
The world seems brighter when we risk and reach for connection.
Addiction is an attempt to displace and not feel emotional pain. Today Amy Winehouse would be turning 40 years old. Addiction doesn’t heal pain, it only creates more pain and loss.
When both partners share their needs and are open to give and receive support it creates more predictability, reliability and accountability, which strengthen the bond because needs are more likely to be understood, negotiated and each partner feels important, heard and connected.
