On this , we share two Bay Campus-related winning images from the 2024 URI Research and Scholarship Photo Contest:

🐟 Second Place: “A Future Fish” by Michael Corso ’24, aquaculture and fisheries science.

This photo of a mahi-mahi was taken at the aquaculture research facilities at . Corso’s research has focused on creating and implementing a new feed-weaning protocol to enhance the early survival of mahi-mahi larvae, research that is ultimately aimed at creating a sustainable alternative to wild-caught seafood. He says, “With many marine pelagic species being overfished to feed the growing human population, aquaculture initiatives are beginning to overtake wild fisheries in terms of global consumption. The advanced aquaculture research being done at aims to ensure that culture methods for species with commercial potential, like mahi-mahi, are fully developed, allowing for future sustainable production.”

🪸 Third Place: "Boiler Room" by Anya Hanson, director, URI Research Diving and Safety Program.

-based diving safety officer Anya Hanson captured this image while on a faculty-led program for AFS/ART 395- Underwater Photography and Film. Hanson says, “Students have the opportunity to learn advanced scuba diving techniques and acquire imagery in diverse environments from New England to the tropical-like waters of Bermuda,” where she took this photo. She adds, “The boiler reefs of Bermuda are named after the appearance of turbulent and boiling seawater. In this photo, a student descends next to a large boiler to explore, despite choppy conditions and surging water movement.”

🪸 🌊 Exciting deep-sea research update! The NOAA was recently in the Gulf of Mexico to launch benthic landers—autonomous platforms designed by the University of Rhode Island. Led by University of Rhode Island's Andrew Davies, these landers will study deep-sea corals affected by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. This first-of-its-kind project, which is funded by NOAA and run in collaboration with the Department of the Interior, aims to create a baseline for deep-sea habitats and potentially enable coral transplant into damaged areas.

🌊🏖️🧪🦠 Last week marked the start of the fifth season of volunteer beach water monitoring on South Ferry Road Beach!

Tests showed no detectable levels of f***l coliform or enterococci bacteria. The weather was sunny with a light breeze, a low tide at 9:30 a.m., and temperatures of 16.4ºC (air) and 13.5ºC (water). Despite 0.84 inches of rain the next day, nearby water bodies showed no elevated bacteria levels. Swimming remains safe!
