The new environmentally friendly Pell Library opened in April 2009 on South Ferry Road in Narraganse
The Pell Library's 68,000 volume research collection emphasizes all oceanographic disciplines, including: biological, chemical, geological, and physical oceanography, marine biology, fisheries, marine and atmospheric chemistry, marine geology, coastal habitats, geosciences, and GSO's most recent specialty, archaeological oceanography. The collection includes monographs, scientific journals, theses, CD ROM's, videos, DVDs, and a Special Collections room.

Yesterday, Rear Admiral Robert Girrier visited the URI Graduate School of Oceanography to be briefed on innovative technologies that the GSO is developing. Girrier, who is the Navy's deputy commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, received his master's degree from URI in marine affairs twenty-five years ago.
