Regular vision testing and evaluations ensure that you always have the clearest vision possible. Our Nashville optometrist provides regular vision acuity test as part of a comprehensive eye exam. Dr. Jones will measure how each eye is seeing by using a wall eye chart and a reading eye chart. The results of these tests are portrayed as a fraction, with 20/20 being the standard for normal distance and reading vision. Depending on the results of your vision test, Dr. Jones may prescribe corrective glasses, contacts, or eye exercises.

Gas permeable lenses are a good solution for patients who suffer from GPC or Keratoconus. A GP lens will limit protein deposits from accumulating which will reduce GPC symptoms. It is also effective in containing corneal bulging and relieving pressure on the tissue for a Keratoconus sufferer.

Dr. Jones and Esteban enjoyed volunteering with VSP and the Hispanic Family Foundation to help 98 patients receive free eye exam and glasses.
Choose glasses that claim to block at least 99 percent of UV rays — UVA as well as UVB. Look for label reading “UV 400,” since this designation means that the glasses block UV rays as small as 400 nanometers, providing 100 percent eye protection. Of course you need to protect your eyes from the glare caused by the visible spectrum as well. To accomplish this, select products that block 75 to 90 percent of visible light.

Squinting at computer, tablet, or mobile screens for hours at a time is a normal part of our lives in the 21st century. Unfortunately, eye problems associated with this activity are also on the rise. Even if you have never had eye problems before, you may have noticed computer vision syndrome symptoms after two or more hours of screen time.

In addition to vision testing, an eye exam in our Nashville office includes testing eye functionality. Our optometrist performs several tests to evaluate depth perception, color vision, eye muscle capabilities, peripheral vision, and responsiveness to light. Several other simple tests are completed to determine whether the eyes are focusing, moving, and working together properly.

If you use prescription eyewear to correct your eyesight, you may also want to think about getting a pair of UV-blocking contact lenses in your prescription. These lenses may be worn alongside a non-prescription pair of sunglasses for optimum eye protection. For more information on choosing the right sunglasses, contact our office today.

Vitamins C and D. Vitamin-C rich foods, like oranges, peppers, tomatoes, and papaya, can lower your cataract risk, while foods high in vitamin D may reduce your risk of macular degeneration. Foods that contain vitamin D include tuna, salmon, sardines, liver, cheese, egg yolks, and fortified orange juice, milk, and cereal.

Zeaxanthin and Lutein. Found in kale, honeydew melon, spinach, peas, yellow squash, oranges, and mangoes, these nutrients can protect your eyes from the effects of the sun.

Beto-Carotene and Vitamin A. Carrots, sweet potatoes, eggs, spinach, butternut squash, and milk all contain healthy amounts of beta-carotene and vitamin A. Eating these foods can keep your eyes moist and reduce your risk of night blindness and eye infections, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Wearing sunglasses that protect your eyes from the harmful effects of ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B rays can help you avoid these conditions. Check the tags and labels when you shop for sunglasses. Avoid glasses that don’t offer 100 percent protection from UV light. For maximum protection, choose wrap-around styles that limit the amount of light that can reach the tops and sides of your eyes.

If you’ve ever worn your lenses longer than recommended or reused solution, you may have paid the price. In fact, eye irritations and infections are common in people who don’t follow good contact lens hygiene. Severe infections can even lead to temporary or permanent loss of vision.

When your eyes are tired or itchy, rubbing them is a natural reaction. Unfortunately, rubbing your eyes can irritate them, injure your corneas (the clear tissue that covers your iris and pupils) or even cause a serious corneal condition called keratoconus.

If you worry about light, including harmful UV, leaking in through sides or top of your sunglasses, wear a broad-brimmed hat to reduce some of this exposure.

A base-down triangle face has a narrower forehead with full cheeks and a broad chin. To offset a broad chin, select frames that widen at the top. Great selections include frames that have heavy color accents and detail on the top part of the frames. Cat-eye shapes also work well to add width and emphasize the narrow upper part of the face.

During an eye exam, Dr. Allison J. Jones will ask you questions about any symptoms or issues you are experiencing, medications you are currently taking, any blurry vision, your work environment, and your overall health. Family history and previous eye or vision conditions will also be discussed during this part of the examination. Dr. Jones will consider this information when determining any treatments or recommendations.

A square face is often characterized by a strong jaw line, a broad forehead, and a wide chin and cheekbones. The width and length of the face are close to being equal. Frames should be selected to make the face look longer and to soften the square angles of the face. Choose frames that are slightly curved (like an oval shape) and that have more horizontal than vertical real estate.

At Thompson Lane Eye Care, we strive to meet all of your eye and vision care needs. Corrective lens evaluations and prescription management are provided by our optometrist in Nashville. A diamond shaped face is often characterized by high, dramatic cheekbones with a narrow eye line and jaw line. This shape is the rarest of all the shapes. Oval frames that are soft in style typically work best to highlight the eyes and cheekbones. Select frames that have detailing, distinctive brow lines, are rimless or a cat-eye shape for best results.
