JUST ANNOUNCED!
Due to an increase in funding from the State, Southeastern Regional Transit Authority (SRTA), will be launching two initiatives starting in January 2024. The "Try Transit" program will offer fare-free service from Jan 1st to June 30th for new riders to see if public transportation can work for them. This program will also provide financial relief to existing customers. They will also be launching a Sunday Service Pilot Program, from late January through June 30th, to prove the viability of full weekend service. Re-establishing Sunday service has been a priority for many in our community for a long time, so this is a positive step in that direction.

Please reach out to SRTA for more details.

It's ! Today is all about celebrating each and every single act of generosity we have to offer. Whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbor out, or showing up for an issue or people we care about, we each have something to contribute.

Part of our work here at the Immigrants' Assistance Center is highlighting the contributions Immigrants make to our local community - included in our Did You Know? Campaign. From legal assistance to help naturalize local residents, to youth and elderly programs, we are here to give back to our community and help those working to contribute to a Greater New Bedford and Bristol County.

Our Story

For over 47 years, the Immigrants’ Assistance Center has been the Southcoast region’s first responder to new arrivals, offering often confused and disoriented newcomers a trusted touchstone as they encounter the American experience. We are a place immigrants can turn to safely for help in essential tasks like applying for citizenship or a green card or a workpermit, seeking benefits for US-born children, finding medical care for elders, getting a getting a driver’s license, or more acutely obtaining legal assistance in the face of detainment or deportation.

As a 501(c)3 charitable organization, we service 9,750 clients, with a staff of 10 professionals and a cadre of volunteers. Our case managers are multi-lingual, speaking five languages, and multicultural, meaning they understand the subtleties of culturally-based dreams and fears.

We are a point of access for immigrants to every type of social service publicly available in the Greater New Bedford Area. The Center helps non-English speakers access information and services and is a vital link between the non-English speaking community and all of the other public and private human service agencies and providers in the area. We provide Citizenship classes and assistance in completing the citizenship application, English language and civics classes, social activities and health services for elders, services for high school students and at risk immigrant youth, educational sessions for care providers, Know Your Rights campaigns to help protect against detainment, employer education services in case of Workplace Inspections, deportation services within the local prison, and a clothing and housewares pantry.
