Creating music instruments in harmony with Nature through the use of biomaterials and biomimicry has been an integral part of Rosenkrantz's artistic practice for many years. Learn more about her piece at her Art Talk at the Art Museum on 12/14.

"As a beekeeper, I have spent countless hours observing the remarkable behaviors of these industrious insects. Bees, with their innate ability to communicate through combs at a 309Hz frequency, have always captivated my imagination as that frequency is also found within the guitar range. Their harmonious society, built on intricate rhythms, offered a unique window into the world of sound and vibration. It was within this crossroads of my passion for beekeeping and my love for music that the Pawtuxet guitar project was born.

I began to discern the blueprints underlying the bees' combs and their behavior. This understanding allowed me to design a specific hive and guitar soundboard bracing that gently guided and encouraged my bees to create combs where I needed them for the instrument resonance, thus becoming co-creators in a harmonious partnership between nature and artistry.

The resulting combs, shaped by the bees' collective efforts, became an integral vital part of the instrument, diffusing organically the note, as an natural amplifier. Each note produced by this organic guitar resonated with the essence of the bees' hive, offering a harmonious reminder of the interconnected web of life, where their collective wisdom reverberates through our shared existence. The Pawtuxet guitar is an ode to profound connections within Nature."

Our newest exhibition, "Gateways to Awareness" explores the role of memory, perception and the five senses in our appreciation of art while engaging the viewer in multi-sensory experiences.

"Sonotron" is a sound-sculpture and light installation based on audio immersion, sacred geometry, and therapeutics, wherein viewers can enter the piece and be bathed in frequencies.

Therapeutically, the sounds are intended to have positive effects on the viewer. Various frequencies used are associated with expanding consciousness, achieving clarity, awareness, balance, and a sense of wellbeing, as well as relaxation and the relief of anxiety and pain. The geometric form itself is based on the study, practice, and application of sacred-geometry energetic principles, anchoring unique and powerful energies associated with universal connection and oneness, as well as assisting with higher states of consciousness. In regard to these elements, it is the artist’s intention that this work functions as a bridge between physical and spiritual phenomena, as well as to encourage a form or interaction that is rooted in active receiving and absorption.

Experience the work for yourself now through December 31

It's the last day of our exhibition, "Under The Sheltering Sky".

The exhibition explores cultural narratives about nature and provides context on the life and legacy of John James Audubon. Designed to spark conversations among viewers and connect the City of New Bedford's historic art collection to important topics of current interest, the exhibition inspired by DATMA's 2023 shelter theme juxtaposes Audubon’s 19th century prints with examples of contemporary art.

Closing October 29

This exhibition features unforgettable color photographs, ephemera, and narratives that together begin to tell the story of the Underground Railroad.

Apart from the thousands of lives saved from slavery, the Underground’s greatest achievement may have been its creation of a truly free zone of in*******al activity, where African Americans not only directed complex logistical and financial operations, but also supervised networks that included white men and women who were accorded no special status because of their color. If the long, disheartening history of slavery showed white Americans at their worst, the history of the Underground Railroad reveals people—white and black alike—at their bravest and most self-sacrificing best, as an enduring model of in*******al collaboration for our own time, and for times to come.

John Woodrow Wilson was a sculptor, painter, and printmaker, best known for his powerful portraits of Black men, with a distinct interest in both politically and socially conscious art.

Wilson’s interest in socially relevant themes arose in part from his exposure to the Social Realism that dominated American art during the Depression of the 1930s and continued through the early 1940s. The artist was further motivated by strained racial relations within the United States, and Wilson’s vulnerable social position as a black artist in the twentieth century is often reflected in his work.

A New Bedford resident, William White, a self-taught wood carver, creates an original type of folk art with his straightforward naturalistic style of wall sculptures. White’s main oeuvre is carved animals, especially birds, mounted on found pieces of wood, often driftwood, a choice reflecting his locale.

White employs nuanced colors and fine textures to achieve a striking verisimilitude with his subjects, while his settings for them suggest domesticity more than the great outdoors.

"Through Darkness Into Light: Photographs Along the Underground Railroad" from photographer Jeanine Michna-Bales

In practice, the Underground Railroad was a model of democracy in action. As Isaac Beck, a stationmaster in Ohio, put it, “There was no regular organization, no constitution, no officers, no laws or agreement or rule except the ‘Golden Rule,’ and every man did what seemed right in his own eyes.”

Fugitives were always in danger of recapture. Some were snatched by professional slave hunters from their homes or places of work in New York, Boston, and elsewhere, and shipped back south in chains, while many conductors and stationmasters were prosecuted under the Fugitive Slave Law. Conductors caught below the Mason-Dixon line could expect no mercy. Calvin Fairbank, a divinity student from New York, was arrested for transporting a fugitive family out of Kentucky, where he served thirteen years at hard labor in the state penitentiary and suffered regular flogging. Seth Concklin, another New Yorker, was murdered after his capture with a family of freedom seekers in Indiana, and his body tossed in the Ohio River.

See this exhibition now through October 29.

Our exhibition, "Under The Sheltering Sky" explores cultural narratives about nature and provides context on the life and legacy of John James Audubon. Designed to spark conversations among viewers and juxtaposes Audubon’s 19th century prints with examples of contemporary art.

J.J. Audubon's masterful hand-colored engravings invite the viewer into spectacularly staged avian theater pieces. American Robin’s montage of bird families feeding their young on an extravagantly lush branch is set in a neutral background with each highly stylized fan-like leaf exquisitely rendered and arranged to serve as a visual foil to the dynamic action.

Despite the flurry of activity in the scene, there is an eerie stillness, which is not a surprise when you discover that Audubon created still-life displays of birds he had killed, stuffed and wired to an armature as models to base his illustrations.

Art talks: Spaces Of Erasure, October 18th.
Tickets: fb.me/e/1guSYiF7G

In conjunction with the exhibition, Under The Sheltering Sky, Peter Macapia presents a lecture discussing buildings and spaces that have been erased from the history of Black American experience. Through a series of historical and political analyses, we ask: what is the difference between the disappearance of space and spaces of erasure?

The sites of erasure we will examine in this talk include the Slave Theater in Brooklyn (1984), Black Wall Street in Tulsa – the Tulsa Massacre (1921) and Osage Avenue in Philadelphia (1985).

Peter Macapia's work in art, architecture, and philosophy explores geopolitics and space. He is a visiting critic at Columbia and Yale and the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including the Presidential Fellowship from Columbia University where he received his PhD.

Meet your pottery instructor, Jillian R. McEvoy

McEvoy once described her work as being "...influenced by natural forces and environmental transformations which occur over time, including textures and surfaces of plant-based materials. These visual observations informed my approach toward surface manipulation. Clay is an ideal medium to explore the natural world because the physical process in clay mimics changes and progressions in nature."

Jillian McEvoy's works have been exhibited in the Best of SUNY Student Art Exhibition 2018 in Albany, N.Y. Her works have also been exhibited in SUNY Cortland’s Student Select Exhibition in 2017 and 2018. In 2017, Jillian McEvoy received the Jo Schaffer Award in Art History, and in 2019 she received the Gerald N. DiGiusto Award in Studio Art. In 2017, she was chosen to create a painting of the campus’ Old Main building for the 2017 SUNY Cortland Holiday Message.

Our Story

In 1963, New Bedford held a cultural festival with artwork on view in what was then known as “The Vault” building. Engaging with art in the space sparked the community to ask, “wouldn’t it be wonderful to make this into an art museum?” Efforts to open the museum began in 1992 when Mayor Rosemary Tierney appointed a citizens group to pursue the idea.

In 1993 as supporters pushed their dream for a Museum through the levels of city government and community support the reason behind this expansion at City Hall Square it was clear– this building will allow the New Bedford Free Public Library to display its collection. According to former Mayor Frederick Kalisz Jr., the “critical mass ” of the arts resurgence in New Bedford came with the city’s acquisition of the Art Museum Building. Kalisz credits then City Councilor Ken Ferreira, who came to vote despite being ill at the time. Winning by a 6-5 vote, the idea became reality. The doors officially opened on April 21, 1996.

On February 3, 2014, New Bedford Art Museum and ArtWorks! Partners for the Arts & Community merged. The combining of these two long-standing art organizations has created an exciting organization committed to serving the community and beyond. At the core of what we do is making art accessible to everyone.

Offering engaging exhibitions of artwork from around the corner and across the ocean, there’s always something exciting and thought-provoking to see. Linger, learn and appreciate art and artistic expression strolling through the Museum’s main Skylight Gallery. You’ll discover new delights as you explore the Museum’s home, a former bank that creates a unique and unusual setting for art. Continually changing exhibitions across the year vary in subject matter and artistic medium. Contemporary and historic art, as well as local, national and international artists, have been displayed. A great schedule of programs such as lectures, artist talks, and inspired performances add depth and context to your experience of the art.
