In “Hometown” John Bullard writes extensively on his time working for WHALE in the 1970s, including the many partners that helped facilitate the work such as Tom Hauck:
“To strengthen the partnership between the district and the City, WHALE hired an architect.[…] We were lucky to find Tom Hauck, a gifted, gentle, young architect from Cleveland for this ambitious partnership. […] Tom Hauck died far too young of AIDS. His younger brother Chuck, attracted to the area by Tom, continues Tom’s genius as the founder and creative force behind Gallery X. I remember Tom every time I walk the district’s sidewalks.”

Hear about Spinner's history as well as its work to document the fishing industry from founder Joe Thomas in this informative talk!
Joseph Thomas co-founded Spinner Publications in 1981. Since that time he has served as Publisher and Executive Director of the organization, overseeing production of more than 50 books and numerous works that document the history and culture of southeastern Massachusetts.
“The mayor who was closest to me in every way and taught me the most was Carlton Viveiros of Fall River. Carl is a little older than me and was elected to office before me. He was good friends with Jack Markey, and in many ways, he is very different from me. He is Portuguese; I am Yankee. I had advanced degrees; he didn’t. I was outspoken; Carl was quiet. I was book smart; Carl was street smart. But Carl saw in me someone who had potential and the right motives. I will always be grateful that he mentored me and became a lifelong friend. He would bust my chops mercilessly, but he taught me with kindness and love about politics.”
