📣📣📣 Teachers College, Columbia University presents:
THIS MONDAY!!! March 29th, 5:00 - 6:00

🙌 The CoT 2021 Webinar 🙌
(for Bilingual Educators, ENL specialists, and Social Studies teachers)

🌐"Our GLOCAL Imperative, Thinking Globally and Acting Locally"🌐

by Pedro Trivella, Fulbright scholar, ESL/Bilingual educator at Asbury Park school district, New Jersey.

Mr. Trivella shares 🗣

💭 "As a second language learner, EL educator, and Fulbright scholar, I strive to teach to the “whole child”. Reflecting on how to best equip my EL students with a strong sense of identity and voice has guided me to question whether ELs’ acculturation process should focus on Globalism or Americanism.

America’s DNA is intercultural, consequently, globalism must play a greater role in our education. I strongly share Dr. Kings’ intercultural philosophy, which he clearly summed up in his 1967 Christmas Sermon by stating: "Before you finish breakfast, you’ve depended on half the world".

(for Bilingual Educators, ENL specialists, Social Studies teachers, Elementary and Middle Childhood educators)

🌐"Our GLOCAL Imperative, Thinking Globally and Acting Locally"🌐

by Pedro Trivella, Fulbright scholar, ESL/Bilingual educator at Asbury Park school district, New Jersey.

The GLOCAL education philosophy empowers stakeholders to successfully evaluate and implement effective actions that benefit their local communities by embracing a global mindset.

Global Education offers ELLs meaningful opportunities to develop citizenship responsibilities and acquire new ways of saying, doing, while engaging in civic-oriented initiatives.

You do not need to be an expert on every global issue to educate your students in global citizenship. Join me in this fun Global exploration!

You will learn five user-friendly strategies that will empower your students to effortlessly and routinely:

o Recognize perspectives

o Take action

We are excited to announce the upcoming 2nd edition of the CoT 2021 to be held on April 10th. Our team has put together a list of potential themes for the conference. We are inviting you to take a vote on the one you believe will benefit the educator community the most given the current state of the K-12 field and our fellow teachers' pressing needs.

Please, follow the link - http://bit.ly/3qGUnrt - and participate in our very short survey (it will only take you 1-2 minutes) so that we could solidify the theme for The CoT April Edition. Your opinion is critical to us as we want to serve the K-12 educator community to the best of our ability, and making well-informed decisions is the first step to achieving this goal.

We encourage you to share this poll with your colleagues and anyone involved in the K-12 system!

The poll closes on January 20th!

We deeply appreciate your contribution and commitment to the field!

Understanding Students with Traumatic Pasts 01/24/2020

In order to raise awareness about trauma-informed teaching, Hannah Benson from All Things ESL podcast kindly shared with Celebration of Teaching her recent episode "How to Relate to Students with Traumatic Pasts." It compares feelings of teacher burnout to what recent immigrants go through emotionally, as well as how to handle the results of trauma within the classroom setting.

To learn more about trauma-informed teaching first-hand and/or share your own experience on this matter, join us on March 7th at Columbia University, Teachers College.

Share your lesson and activity plans for working with multilingual learners! Build your resume, gain conference experience, meet fellow professionals in your field, get feedback on your ideas, and exchange ideas with other educators.

We are looking for:

10 to 15-minute lessons or activities designed for multilingual learners, including refugees, students with interrupted or limited formal education, or other language learners who may have experienced trauma.

Ideas for activities might include:

- mindfulness practices,
- arts-based projects,
- strategies for lowering ELLs' affective filters,
- story-telling or creative writing skills development with ELLs,
- peer-to-peer support in learning.

Who We Are

We were founded in 2014 by graduate students in the TESOL/Applied Linguistics PK-12 Program of Teachers College, Columbia University. The first and second-year cohorts in the program continue to host this conference annually.

Celebration of Teaching came about organically at Teachers College in response to students’ calls for less theoretical and more hands-on content based strategies directed toward serving English Language Learners (ELLs) in mainly PK-12 New York public school classrooms. During the CoT conference, innovative and exploratory practice is encouraged, as participants look for new ways to address age-old and new challenges faced by teachers and learners in school today.

Our mission is one of cooperative practice, and this event provides participants with many opportunities to develop networks with peers at Teachers College and potential colleagues from the community, which will serve as helpful resource into the world of New York public schools.
