Enslaved women, active in their self-liberation, often had their names and stories surface in local newspapers through ads placed by jailers and enslavers seeking their return.

On Thursday, June 9 at 6pm, Dr. Mary Mitchell explores court cases and fugitive slave advertisements to piece together a clearer picture of self-liberating women in the cityscape and social world of antebellum New Orleans.

Dr. Mitchell will also talk about her work with Freedom on the Move, a crowd-sourced database of fugitive slave advertisements printed in North America before the Civil War.

Did you know the Lower French Quarter was once referred to as Piccolo Palermo? With such a large influx of Sicilian immigrants in the late 19th century, the French Quarter quickly became a working class community rich in Italian culture. This home at 1113 Chartres was a large part of that Italian American experience. Over the course of a half century starting at the end of the Civil War, BK House was owned first by the Lanata and then Giacona families, each prominent figures in their communities.

We will kick off a week of celebrating this shared history starting this Sunday, March 13 with a picturesque courtyard concert! Electric Yat Quartet will be joined by renowned opera singer Barbara Smith-Davis as they explore Italian classics such as Vivaldi and Puccini.

Tickets are limited! Reserve your seats here:
